Unhappy kawasaki klf 220a hates me

So I got this quad from a friend and it has never ran right since it was new, sometimes if I try real hard, I can have it run for about a day, but after i run it for 30 min, it just gets harder and harder to start, and it stops idling. I think the timing is off on it, because its blowing air out the carburetor and stuff, but I'm sure i fixed that because the cam sprocket was off a tooth from the timing mark, but I'm wondering, how do i check the ignition timing, and how do I make this thing run right.

heres a list of what its doing:
    backfires every now and then
trys to run every 5 to 10 sec when i crank it
gas builds up on the back of the carburetor
It acts like its starving for gas

when i sometimes get it running:
it warms up really quick and starts to over heat after 5 min or so
    it doesn't have much power
theres a clicking sound when i am driving and let off the gas

hey, first set the valve lash. if that's not it, pull the muffler apart, remove the spark arrester. sounds like plugged exhaust.
    one cylinder is not enough!!
