New overview of a CPSC document from a hearing in Wisconsin, 1985.

Not completely finished, I ran out of steam at around 200 pages. I will have a part 2 to follow up and complete it at a later date. Comments, and thoughts are welcome at the article as well as here.

Excellent work Billy. I was growing up in WI at that time. I remember the days of riding home on the bus and counting at least 6 trikes riding the hills and ditches on the way on almost any given day.

O.k. Billy. Ever since I poked my head in the door of you're cpsc information (great job dawg!), I've been pondering a most important question. I really don't think this is my opinion, but the way the system works. I really don't believe there were too many people involved higher up in the ban that actually even cared folks were getting killed. The Gov't. could care less about the public's well being. My very important question is this: How many of these board members and officials in the cpsc, or involved, were moving towards promotion or a elected political position. How many were elected to office or a supervisor position or trying to launch a career move? Is there a dye hard member after 25 years that is adamantly fighting for his trike-ban belief? Where did these elected officials, & unofficials go? Any of them involved in the quad bans of lately? If one of these power-hungry members were to be interviewed by a major news network and cornered into looking like a total fool, the public opinion would be changed and this display of power and control would be exposed. The only real problem, who cares? Very few of us. But it is the principal of righting a wrong. I'd like to see the mistakes admitted and reversed to to see a little bit of justice. Remember, here in MT folk like trikes. Only a handful out of thousands are idiots & they moved here from elsewhere and aren't real people anyways. I have another suggestion, but may be a bit of work for you. As a member signs up, have them sign to a pre-written e-mail letter (voluntary) to whom you may feel it concerned, Billy. So that all members have contacted the forces to be to file an opinion or complaint, I am guilty of not contacting the cpsc or any legislators with a statement or opinion. If they have 10 to 15,000 3-wheelers or atv'ers contact them this would at least raise some eyebrows. Some thing we can type our name into and hit send, I'd do it in a heart beat.

As a part of this process of reviewing the information, I've been slowly compiling information soft of towards a mini biography of the "key players" in the ban. I'll be honest and say I haven't been able to do a whole lot with it yet, but yes, I'm on the same page with you. I can tell you that Commissioner Dawson (The only member of the panel that seemed to understand the slippery slope they were treading with government intervention of personal responsibility) was appointed by President Reagen. Chairman Terrence Scanlon (One of the most easily to spot as being "anti") was appointed by President Jimmy Carter. So yes, there was DEFINITELY politics involved with it. I think it might have been a fiercely more politically charged event than most any of us ever knew. I think I also remember tracking down info on another panel member that is now an advisor/special witness for product liability attorney, which can tell you a lot right there too.
