The airbox and snorkel on a 200x are pretty isolated from engine heat already. Assuming that you would have a proper filter mounted, the only thing it would hurt would be your eardrums from the less restricted airflow. The main purpose of the airbox is to quiet the intake side of the engine. The main purpose of the snorkel is to keep water out of the intake.

I always thought a filter mounted to the carb side of the airbox that almost fills the airbox would make the best improvement because it would increase the surface area of the filter. I have also wondered if the people that drilled their 200x airbox have failed to put a filter on the carb side and are pulling unfiltered air into their carb.

Cold air means more dense air. More dense air means more oxygen to burn. People in my area run air boxes w/o the lid on or with holes drilled in the top. Keep in mind that we are in the desert also and have little chance for water entering the engine.

BTW the air box is mounted directly to the rear of the engine, therefore air flowing around the engine from the front to the rear would pass directly over the air box. Perhaps this is why the snorkle is attached to the backbone of frame and is open to the airflow (reduced at that) near the steering neck of the frame thus reducing heated air from entry to the carb.

my thinking is the way honda has designed thier intake is superior to anything else . It acts as a forced cold air induction as soon as you begin to drive. The only benefit i can see from drilling holes and having an open filter would be in the idle to 1/8 throttle response range, after that , you loose all of the forced air induction of the design from Honda.
Leave it stock is my $.02
correct me if I am wrong. I have never had any benefits from the open airbox after 1/8 throttle. in fact , it feels like you loose top end performance once you open/remove the stock airbox. And the intake noise will drive you crazy !
