Will any sort of tecate stator and flywheel work on a early kx 500 (1986
A friend is in the midst of a street conversion and that will make things much easier. Figured someone here would know.

Absolutely not. If memory serves me correctly, the KX 500 flywheel is a lot smaller than the Tecate/KX 250 setup.

In fact yes, there is a way to do it. I had a friend in high school that had a KX500 (87 I think), that had a tecate lighting coil in it. I don't remember how he did it. I'm pretty sure it was a kit he bought. I'll contact him and ask. This would have been 1989 or 1990.

Hmmm, I seriously doubt it. I'm gonna go take a peek in the shed and see what I can see.

I'm changing my answer. Judging by what I just saw, it does look possible. I couldn't find either a Tecate flywheel or the KX flywheel, but I looked at where the stator would mount for both. Just by eye the distance between the two mounting screws appears to be the same and it also appears as if there would be enough room in the KX case for the Tecate flywheel. My KX motor is an 86 as well.

I went out and took a couple of pictures of a parts 85 kxt motor I have on the bench.
The stator plate center to center mounting screw holes are indicated in MM.
The crank shaft at its widest point coming out of the case is the other picture.
I am thinking you will be able to measure up your buddies kx 500 stator mounting area and make your own determination ,,, (?).

According to different sites on the internet all of the kx500's except 86-89 already have a mount for a lighting coil. The lighting coils sell for $40-$60 and bolt on. The problem would be the years 86-89 don't have a provision for the lighting coil. I'm pretty sure that my friend mailed his stator mount to someone, and they put the Tecate lighting coil on it and mailed it back. I fired off an e-mail to him, we'll see what he says.

yes they swap

It does work, my brothers kxt500 had one when he first bought it. You have to modify the stator plate and make your own timing marks for it to work right, power delivery had a so-so feel to it even with correct timing. The BEST way to go is get a 90-04 KX500 ignition system you get a stronger timing curve, better built flywheel, no guesswork on the timing, and a lighting coil bolts right on the stator plate with zero mods required.

Thanks a ton for that info, one last question. Do you know what year kxt stator was used? Or all the years the same setup?
I believe they're all the same from 84-88, but I would like somebody to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not 100% positive on that.
I was thinking it wouldn't run the same with the KXT setup on there because of the huge difference in flywheel size. That's what 3Razors is talking about. The KX flywheel is tiny compared to the KXT one.

Well this hog is going on the street, so a little extra flywheel weight will be a good thing actually.
The 90-04 KX500 flywheel is monster in size. It is even larger in diameter than the tecate one and heavier to at around 4.5 pounds. Here is a pic I had of both setups. KX500 on the left and Tecate in the middle. The KX500 stator shown also had the lighting coil installed on the plate, screws right into the factory holes.

All the kxt250 3 wheeler stators were the same from 84-87. The KXF (4 wheeler) used a different one from the 3 wheeler. The KXT flywheel works on all years/models 3/4 wheelers. After running the late KX500 complete setup I wouldn't even consider using the Tecate stuff on there.
