    It pays to ask questions

Called a guy up today that had a 1985 250r that was kinda rough. We were talking about the trike and he said "I don't have any gas or oil" so I told him "well go get some gas and I'll bring the oil" He said "what do you mix it at?" I said "I prefer 40:1, what type of oil have you been running" He says "5W30." I could make a whole page about our conversation....but you get the just of it. IT PAYS TO ASK QUESTIONS lol

I would not run it in my R by all means. But in the olden days, 2-strokes ran on things worst than 5-30. My dad had a 60ish model 2-stroke Chrysler 5hp outboard that ran motor oil. I do not think they had "2-stroke oil" back then like we have now.

come to think of it, i was looking up some info on the web about Scott-Atwater outboards. turned up some interesting info, they were in use in the 40's and 50's, went out of business years ago. But what i found interesting was some manufacturer info and specs i found, they recommended a rich mix of SAE30. i dont remember the exact ratio, might have been 16:1. i got a chuckle out of it. but back then, those motors were running considerably lower rpms, and since they scavenged water for cooling, ran quite a bit cooler too i would guess...

I think your right. My buddy had an old Husky dirt bike and it had a tank decal that said ''mix with vegetable oil''.

Fellas Two stroke mixing oil is made to burn. Motor oil is not. It probably wouldn't have critically hurt the 1985 250r but. But if somebody says "Oh I'm running 5W30." That throws up the red flag to me.
