a couple 250sx questions and a pic request for reference

1985 Honda 250sx

I took my seat off the plastic a few weeks ago and I forgot how the spring fits into the whole latch mechanism...If someone could post a pic of the latch mechanism I could probally figure it out. lol

I also changed my differential fluid the other day and when I opened the filler cap I could tell the oil was bad. It looked like mud. I drained it and filled it back up with new oil about 5 or 6 times and it was still coming out the same. Is there any way I can flush the whole differential out real good?

not sure about the seat but for the diff you can use diesel to flush it. its most likely water and mud in it, the 85 sx's are known for poor sealing on the diffs so just stay out of the h2o

lol i had that same problem just yesterday when i was installing my new fenders, messed around with it for a while until i got it right.

I can't help you with the seat right now, but ditto on the issues with the differential. You've gotta find the place where the water comes in. On the '85 250SX, the documented flaw is in the driveshaft boot not sealing. I replaced the boot on mine, they're still available. However, you can also get water in through the wheel bearings if the seals are no good, and correct me if I'm wrong here guys, but even the swingarm. If the swingarm bearings/seals are bad, the water gets in that way too. I replaced all this stuff a few years ago, and this summer we went on a ride that had us well submerged several times, and I came out ok.

Your diff is junk. It will run awhile,but make no mistake,unless it was rebuilt recently with new bearings ,it is not long for this world! The water usually enters thru the pinion seal.Peak in there,I suspect you'll find oil. It should not be there! It means your seal is bad.You can run it until it talks to you,and when it does,STOP ! Or,,rebuild it now,and know what you've got! Anyhow,,the spring is ALMOST self explanitory! Almost, work with it,you'll get it!

I would flush the diff with ATF, refill, flush... Repeat... I would putt around very lightly for just a few moment to help warm it up, then do it again... Until its clean, then use hypoid 80 in it....

I had a similar problem by sinking my 250sx in a puddle. I did an engine flush with diesel and then again with ATF and 10w30 , ran it a bit, then changed to 10w40.

I also changed my rear differ oil ( SAE 80 ) and it was a light chocolate milk color. after I drained it I squirted a bunch of gear oil in there and pushed the machine up and down the drive way, let the new oil mix with the residual, drained it....did this about 3 times and then it was all coming out the nice clear clear yellow color.

okay guys Ive got an update: I flushed the differential with diesel about 5 or 6 times then flushed with gear oil about 5 or 6 times and its still coming out brown. I even put some diesel in a squirt bottle and sprayed all of the visible mud and oil in the diff. Still muddy oil. I guess Im just gonna have to go through and replace everything. How much am I looking at spending on a diff overhaul?

hahaha i did this same exact thing on my old sx i had to ask the old guy down the street if i could check out his old one to see how it went on if you havent figured it out from what i remember the spring hooks into a little hole and then you run it to the little latch its hard to explain but im doing it in my head lol
