    spend money....lol
new fenders, powder coat, a little elbow grease

new gas tank if it looks bad (or get the old one restored at a body shop)
    new seat cover if needed.

    she will look new.

while your at it replace worn components. like bearings and maybe some engine parts.
    good luck

    Take apart.
    Clean.
    Repair/Replace/Paint.
    Assemble.

You can spend a big crapload of $$ or a little crapload of $$. You will not get it back on resale unless it's a 250r or 350x.

Set aside a reasonable amount of time, that the bike will be down. Get a good idea of what all you will want/need to replace and start pricing parts. Have the money before you start (plus 15% - 25% extra for stuff that you didn't plan on) and if possible start locating parts and buying them up front. Study your owners/shop manual BEFORE you start taking things apart (this can save you from messing good parts up). Some parts might not be readily available and having to hunt after your bike is down sucks. The more of the logistics that you handle before the work starts the smoother it will go. And above all be realistic about the end product and your skills to do the work. If you plan on powder coating and custom mods don't take the prices that people are paying in other religions as being the price you'll pay in your area, things like that vary a great deal from place to place. Bag and mark the small parts (bolts, nuts, spacers and such) as you take the bike apart, this saves time and problems.

Great point - Ziploc freezer bags and a sharpie will be your best friend when you put it back together!
