10'' wide tires on 12'' wide rims?

Alright, as you all know, snow's coming soon here in Canada. So I found some 22x10-9 4snow tires for sale cheap and I've got these 12'' wide with 9'' diameter BR rims in my garage. I want to know if I'll be able to seat the beads with rims 2'' wider than the tires. And if yes, is it gonna mess with the original shape of the tire?

Try a ratchet strap around the diameter of the tire (tread). Shouldn't make a huge difference on the rims you have.

It probably won't matter much in the snow but keep in mind your wheels will be out there exposed to damage from rocks etc. without the wider tire to protect them.

your rims are probably not 12 inches wide if your just going by the size of the tire on the rim right now.
my big red has 25-12-9 tires on it, that does not mean the rims are 12 inches wide. they are most likely 9 inches wide.
the widest rims i have ever seen was 11 inch for motocross quads. most rims are 8-9 inches wide as for rear rims, exception to modern day 4x4 quads.
the width of the tire is generally greater than the width of the rim. thats why most tires are no narrower than 10 inches for rear tires and rear rims aren't normally wider than 9-10 inches. again new 4x4s normally use narrower tires.
what are the stock tire size on your year big red? my 84 big red (i think the newer 250s too) are made for 25 inch tires. going down to the 22inch 4-snow tire might not benefit the big red because the axle's ground clearance was set up for the 25 inch tire. even with the expanding 4-snow tire the ground clearance issue may out weigh the advantage of the paddle type tread for snow.

If you got a BIG gap useually the easyest way (although not very safe) is to use some starting fluid.

I wont be riding rocky terrain much, mostly wood and lakes, so that doesnt bother me.

Your right, I havent thought that the rims were probably smaller than tires. I want to put those tires on my SX in fact. Stock tire size is 22x11-8 so its the same diameter than stock. I wont loose any ground clearance or top speed. I just have those old 85 BR (250cc model) rims collecting dust in my garage so I thought I could use them. The guy went hunting and he's suppose to call me when he'll come back. Does 70 bucks sound fair for a pair that, he said, were in good shape?

yeah, sounds like a deal, also a SX will be perfect for those tires. they are like 55 a piece retail so i think 70 for a good condition pair if very fair.

Finally got a hook of the guy, got them back home. Look brand except that they were a little dirty from being stored in a barn but they're in great shape, no cracks. They do fit on BR's rims but you gotta mess with them to seat the beads. Rims are wider than the tire itself lol but I'll still use them. I gotta say, these tires expand alot!!! At 30psi, I thought they were about to explode. 22 inches tires became about 25-26 inches tall!!!

I'm now waiting for snow to come!

they are made to expand when spinning at high speeds like a drag race tire. gives for better ground clearance when you floor it. Im sure that function would be better on a machine with more power to really get the tires going but still.
whats the recommended PSI to run the tires at? most tires say on the side wall of the tire. I would think 2-5 PSI

I dont know what the operating pressure is, and I forgot to ask in the last post. All they say on the sidewall is 36psi max to seat the beads and to refer to the user manual to get operating pressure. But if I compare it to my dirt dog tires, which max pressures are: operating:5psi,
bead seating:15psi, I would think they need a little more pressure,more likely 12psi if you calculate. But maybe it's not related
I guess I'll just use my foot to get them at the ''tenderness'' I want them.

I guess my tires are narrower than 10inch or they are over inflated. When I lay them down on the side, it's sitting on the rim instead of on the tire sidewalls. They are a about 10psi right now.

with big soft balloons i would run them real soft, especially in the snow. I wouldn't run much more then 5. I have yet to ever seen an ATV tire says anything more then 5psi for max operating PSI.

You definatly have a skinny tire on a wide rim.
