front forks question

the front forks on my 83 250R feel like there is no fluid left. I am sure I will have to change the seals, but, does the fluid go in the valves at the top of each fork?

Dissassembly has started and the credit card is bracing itself! Have any of you had any luck with that spray paint that is supposed to be for plastic? I am thinking silver since I intend to crome the frame.

One last question: there is crack in the body and a friend said his neighbor used this stuff you put through a hot glue gun to fix his dirt bike, does anyone know what this is called and does it work?

About the fork seals / oil. You should run a heavier weight oil in the forks when you drain the old oil out. I believe it has 10 weight from the factory, so I would put at least 15w or 20w Bel Ray fork oil in to stiffen them up a little. It really helps when you get thicker oil, or make some preload spacers, like a few of us guys did on here wink . You only want to do that if your a heavy jumper. Here is how to put the oil in and take the oil out of your forks after the seals are replaced or in working order

first, let ALL the pressure out of the valves on top of each fork. It works best if you have your machine on a jack. Now you can drain the oil. There should be an allen bolt on the bottom of each fork, just loosen that up, take it out, and drain as much of the oil out as you can. Next, you put the bolts back into the bottom forks, and you take off the cap nut (your valves are hooked to this nut) just take this nut off the top of the fork. Next pour the right ammount of oil into each fork (check your local Honda dealer, they would know how much to put in) After you do this, your ready to go.

I would not recommend painting the plastics, it will peel and it will get stratched real easy and it will be back to the orginal fender color.

For repairing the fender you can get a plastic welder. It is basically a torch and you take a strip of plastic that is the same color and basically weld them together.

I haven't tried this stuff so I don't have a comment on how well it works. It would be pretty neat it performs as advertised, But I have doubts.

We also replaced the OEM springs on my forks with Progressive Springs I bought at Dennis Kirk. If you are going to buy new fork seals get OEM Honda. Bill said they are better than the top of the line ones I bought from Dennis Kirk. :oops: I also got OEM Fork Boots to replace the SunStar ones that were on my bike. Service Honda sells them for under $20 a piece. I'm 6'4" and ~240lbs so I went with the 'medium' Fork Oil...15wt I think.... I hope to have the time Sunday to bolt the bike back together.
