    front axle removal???

Noob question. How do you remove the front axle from an 84 200es?? Shop manual says to remove the nut. Than remove axle and 'collar'. The axle will not come out. Does it slide out or is the other side threaded in? It's stuck in there....

    Wanted to reply but

    I never did an 84,

They say the 85 can weld itself in there somehow and I'm NOT looking forward to fighting with it.

How did you get yours out?

The shaft was corroded/stck to the outer brake drum/cover. I tried heat, denaturants amd a bfh. The bfh eventually won. I'm hoping I can salvage the shaft, it's pretty beat up.

so the axle shaft threads INto the brake drum? or just slides in and corrodes itself.

I guess we should walk around all our stuff a couple times a year with penetrating oil and hit the critical connections.

You've given me hope to actually get my brakes to work.

Sorry for all the bad spelling on my last post, typing on my phone...

It slides in, no threads. It's a tight fit, and with the corrosion, it pretty much welded itself together. I'm going to use some neversieze on everything on final assembly.

By the looks of the shaft before I tried to remove it, I would say someone else tried to also as the end was mushroomed over and the nut was missing.
