200M ??? Cylinder on a 1985 200X??? Ticking noise?

Hi Guys! I just brought home a very nice looking 1985 200X yesterday. It seems to run pretty strong for a 200X as well. The part that concerns me is that it has a cylinder and head from a 200, 200M, 200ES or something. It has the thinner fins and the manual compression release on the head. It seems to run OK, but at higher RPMs it has a 'ticking' noise. Could this be the piston hitting something? ONly happens at higher RPMs. It came with another cylinder and a different cam in a box, but that cylinder is not a 200X one either. Any ideas on what the ticking is? I don't have a clue as to what piston or cam is currently in there. Thanks for the help! Dave

Could be Rockers, or Cam chain Check the valve adjustments.

I wonder if you may have a weak valve spring? that floats when you rev it and allows the valve to tap the piston.

Its a long shot but maybe you can try to push down on the valves and see if they are about the same resistance.

is this under free revving? or when you ride it?
if thats the case it should run lousy if a valve is floating.

I forget, does the x have an external head/rocker oiler tube and pressurized filter like the 250's?

run it with the rocker covers off for a minute and see if it sprays oil all over.

actually you can kinda cover it with a paper towel to save some cleanup.

I've also never heard much trouble with a compression release but I think by design, they hold a valve open somehow and are supposed to disengage all by themselves, if you believe that!

Maybe there's something in that setup gone funky.
