you would need to split the cases. which means complete engine disassembly. A good way to see if something is broken is drain the oil and look for little metal shavings or even chunks. plus it never hurts to change the oil anyhow.

Yep, change the oil. It NEVER hurts to do an oil change.
Getting to the transmission means a complete splitting of the case, as I have done already.

Have you tried adjusting your clutch? Do you have a shop manual to reference for how you do these types of things yet? If not, you really need to get one. And by the way, 25 + year old trikes, make noises. LOL

are you AND the trike a 110 atc?
sometimes the hi lo range gets inbetween and essentially nowhere IF that model has the hi lo...praying for THE easiest answer for you.
What year is it?
does it shift ok but slip when you gas it?
