I have one in mine now, as it was in a parts motor I bought. I dont think its supposed to do anything special, just a replacement. If it improves or changes anything, I havent noticed.

As far as I know the Hot Rod is supposed to be a direct replacement, it's a little more heavy duty than a stocker, but I don't think they claim it will dramatically improve performance at all, just reliability.
If I can't fix it, it ain't broke!!
