    TecateDan's Tecate build

I'm setting this up for Dan and hopefully he can take it over.

We picked up the Tecate about two months ago. It was kept outside and the engine was locked. The owner swore that it ran last year and it locked up from sitting. It is almost completely original. Original tires, plastics, pipe, probably just about everything. It was in rough shape to say the least. I told Dan before he got back into the hobby that he's either gonna spend big dough on somebody else's build or on his own. Might as well do it yourself and get the satisfaction of knowing what you have.

Here she was the day she came home-

Here's what Danny Boy's done so far. He's trying to figure out what to do for paint or powder-

He got the piston unstuck and it doesn't look so bad in there. Seems like it was a low hour machine-

Yup, welcome to Mass. I just dug out a spare set of forks for him today. Funny thing is they're in better shape than the ones on my trike!

Another thing that Dan didn't mention is that his cylinder was cracked through on the bridge that goes across the intake port. I have a Tecate Cylinder he's going to borrow for now, but he really wants a KX jug if anybody has one. There are three listed on Ebay and two of them are actually Tecate jugs listed as KX jugs. Kinda shady...

The other major things he is tracking down are plastics and a pipe. He is going to buy a set of Maiers unless he comes across a deal in the meantime, so if anybody is trying to move a set of plastics feel free to give him a holler. He is also in need of a pipe, preferably not a DG. We may run the stocker for a bit just until he gets a feel for the machine, but that pipe will not be on there for long.

    Thanks guys.

Whats wrong with DG pipes? are they down on power? do they corrode too easily?

Aways the same comments. Are they better than stock?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Always the same comments", but I am advising Dan in this build. We grew up together and he had a few trikes along the way. A 250SX, a 200S, and finally a 300R. It has been a few years since he has ridden one, never mind owned one, and he has never owned a Tecate. I know them inside and out and he is trusting me and my opinions with this build. I own a DG pipe and I do not like the power it makes compared to my CRF pipe. Is that good enough for you?

Yes, they are better than stock in my opinion.

    Fabio,
I think OZ ment that the general description of the DG pipe always seems to be "its better than stock or a DG" but rarely does anyone explain why they dont like the DG, I dont think he was complaining about your comments, anyway looks like a great start to a ground up rebuild good luck with it

Oops... Well, sorry if I misunderstood you man.

I personally do not like what the DG does to the powerband, but some jetting may have made it better.

Wouldnt suggest clear powdercoating anything that will see any kind of heat. As the clear turns an ugly yellow from heat cycling over time.
