YT125 help! Stalls when brake is applied.

    Hey everyone... first post here.

I recently picked up most of a YT125 3 wheeler. By "most" I mean everything but the seat and plastic and I got it for the motor/trans to use in a different 3 wheeled project.

I've got it running fairly well, but the problem I'm having is that the motor stalls when the wheels stop as the brake is applied. I've never driven the machine, as it has 3 junk tires but I would assume I'd have issues taking off... I would imagine it would stall when putting it into gear to move.

Is this something common, or do I just need to adjust something possibly? I'm completely new to 3-wheelers and 2 stroke engines...

    Thanks!

does it idle high? my 175 did that cause it idled high and the clutch wouldn't disengage.

As I read this several things just don't make sense. Why are you applying the brakes on a machine that has 3 crap tires and isn't moving? I have to think that you are starting the trike in gear and when you apply the brakes, you are stalling the engine out. But you probably don't realize that since the trike isn't moving cause it has 3 crap tires. You probably have tons of stuff that need adjusted. LOL You are kind of going about it backwards, but each their own. Get some tires on that thing and make sure you are in neutral and not in gear and try it again.

We have the machine up on stands... we're definitely starting in neutral. I'm pulling the motor out to use for a different 3-wheeled project so I won't be putting any money into tires for it! The trike idles fine in neutral and then the wheels turn when shifted into first, second, etc... I just happened to try to brake to see if it worked. It did, and as the wheel slowed to a stop the engine bogged down and stalled. We fired it back up and it did the same.

It seems to idle fine, not high at all.

Sounds like the clutch is not disengaging at idle, like it should. You are basically putting the brakes on the engine. With engine off and in gear, does the thing roll?

The engine is not a true automatic like a car, it's actually a clutch mechanism that is activated when you step up or step down on the gear shift pedal. So what happens to a vehicle with a manual clutch when you step on the brake and don't engage the clutch....It stalls.

We figured it is clutch related... is there adjustment in them at all?

I've got a manual now, should I pull the clutch apart and make sure everything looks okay?

The clutch pack itself is probably ok, you may want to check your shift lever and the 3 ball actuator and your clutch adjustment. The clutch adjustment is kind of crazy on the the yts'. You have to take the clutch side round cover completely off. And don't forget to unscrew the oil tattle tale and fill your oil level to it runs out of the hole.

It happens, clutch plates and fibers may be all stuck together. You may have to pull it apart. It's not that big of a deal, but you may want to kind of tilt you whole trike to the left side so all the balls don't drop out from under your clutch hub. You will want to do the same when putting all the balls back in. You'll see what I mean. LOL

It seems to be working now... after fresh oil and adjusting the clutch. I'll keep that in mind though, once I have the new frame done and rolling I may pull it apart if it starts acting up again! I should probably start a new thread, but do you know if it's possible to add a fuel pump to this engine? I have plenty of room to add a fuel tank elsewhere... just not above!

The best thing is just to find yourself a yt175 tank and all the bits, it should bolt on. And you can add a fuel pump. You will need either the 82 yt175 intake or the 83 yt175 cylinder and the yt175 fuel pump. The fuel pump is vacuum operated so you need to run the vacuum line to the pump then the proper fuel lines from the tank to the pump and the pump to the carb. You may have to fab a mount.
