1984 Honda ATC 250r Shift Shaft Question

Its mea again. I just discovered that my foot shifter is cracked, which is practically a givin. The question I have is how hard is it to replace the entire shift shaft? I was thinking about welding the foot pedal to the shifter because the splines on the saft look pretty bad. Tell me the ifs and or buts, pros, cons and so on please. Thanks so much!

You have to remove the motor. Take off the side case pull the shift shaft out and put the new one in. It would be a easy job if you didn’t have to remove the engine to open the case.
