Engine Ticking-250sx-What is it ? Quick Fix?

The snow is falling here in Ontario so I took the bike out for a run.

I rebored the cylinder and put in a new 0.5 piston and rings last year .when it was apart everything looked good.

anyways I noticed this 250sx is a little louder than my other 250sx and I could not put my finger on it. I discovered it today.

at idle there is no ticking as I move up in the gears and keep going at a constant speed I can here a metal ticking or clacking...much like chattering teeth , the chatter goes with the speed of the cylinder strokes...slower rev is a lower chatter, higher rev is a faster chatter.

What is this sound ?

How bad is it ? (as in how serious)

is there a quick fix or does the head or cylinder need to come apart

i would start by checking the valve clearances. does the sound change with engine temp?

Try to adjust the timing chain. Only take a couple minutes.

I have not really notice any change with engine temp. I was riding around in the snow for about half and hour and it sounded the same throughout


How does one adjust a timing chain ?

The service manual explains it well.
You need to get the engine to operating temperature. With the engine going at idle, you loosen (dont remove it) the 10mm bolt on the tip of the chain tensioner. Wait a couple of seconds for the tensioner to adjust the chain by itself then tighten the bolt. As simple as that but you should also check your valves to make sure they are in specs. .003'' clearence
And the tensioner is on the lower front part of the head.

on the 250sx?? the tensionner is automatic,there is no problem to slack,
if you want to check if the chain need to be changed,slack the 2 8mm head bolt and check if the spring of the binder will push the tensionner out,if not,timmig chain need to be changed,personnaly on a 25 years old machine I would suggest to chain it anyway....

I have ever chain my chain for a similar problem,but finally the trouble was easier to solve,the head pipe of the exhaust,the pipe is a double wall tube,and the inner wall was broken,the sound was the same as a timming chain

so assuming it's not a transmixer gear tooth noise, yuou say it ticks faster in neutral?
or just in gear when running?

anyway, I had a heck of a time adj the valves but trying to hold down the rocker arms while it was running with a rag, it took the extra slop out of the valve rockers and confirmed that they were loose.

also confirmed that the oil pump was working since it kinda splattered oil all over the place.

You got a good new clean oil filter element in there?

I have a new oil filter in from last week. I have a new Timer chain installed last year

Could it be a valve sticking? Maybe the chain is good but the timing is slightly off ?

I hope you didn't put your oil filter in backwards.

no the filter is in correctly i have been riding since, incorrectly would have toasted my engine by now

Not necessarily.

check the exhaust bolts on the head pipe, I believe that will fix your problem.

don't over tighten them!
