    Rusty gas tank

Has anyone found a good way to remove rust from the gas tank?

Try the search key under 'rust'

Muriatic acid from pool supply place or hw store but the fumes can kill you and it needs to be neutralized with baking soda. Looks great and willl flash rust almost instantly the second it dries.

I personally powerwash the inside to remove loose stuff ,dry it on the bbq or woodstove or with a hairdryer, blow it out with compressed air,
put a big see thru paper filter on the fuel line, and see how bad it gets after that.

They won't rust without oxygen so if it stays full, it almost won't get worse.
I'm testing a dry one that I filled with carbon dioxide so we'll see how that one looks in the spring.

Hot and cold condensation is the killer so either fullfull or drained bone dry and hung inside a warm dry house with the cap off and inside sprayed with some kind of 2 stroke or penetrant oil, and they'll still rust.

As long as it stops throwing chunks and rust dust and your drainvalve screen is clear,
    you should be ok.

I usually run a foot of seethru fuelline so it loops down and traps crud for the first bit of run time after cleaning
and then cut it to a good length when ready to ride.

I hate tank rust but if they get up around 100$ worth of aggravation, I go plastic.

POR15 is supposed to react with the rust as opposed to covering it with liner type sealers.
    Never tried it, sounds interesting.

Muric Acid is what some members use. Be very careful and take precaution from fumes if you do. Outdoors only in my opinion with rubber gloves and face mask. Some dilute it 50/50 others not diluted. I learned this method here so if you search you should find the other Threads and how long others kept the acid in the tank. I did dilute mine approx. 50/50 and put a small chain link sections in it to shake it around and remove debris, scaling, etc. by rotating the tank. The chain links are easy to get back out vs using nuts where some may get stuck. Some people put several small nuts like 3/8 and shake them around in it. My tank came out pretty good, I did have to clean it a few more times with gas as some sediment showed up a few times but looking inside after there was a huge difference, hardly seen any rust anywhere. If I need to do another one I'll go 75 acid 25 water to try and avoid flushing it again. Hope this helps!

How old are you? What a ridiculous post! You need a new tank if theres rust in it? WTF.

To the OP, use the acid and dilute it with water. Let it sit over night, and wa lah. Make sure you fill to the top so it gets all the rust out and etches the metal everywhere. Also, be sure to plug the petcock hole, otherwise the acid eats through the petcock. Make sure to rinse with acetone, and then right away seal it with REDcoat gastank liner or the alike.

there is this stuff called acid safe that I bought to clean out one of my tanks. It is supposed to be a little safer than muratic acid I found it at the local hardware store for 7 bucks a gallon. Worked very well

Muratic Acid isn't that dangerous, I mean we all rebuild carbs and play with gasoline and deadly aerosols right?. Just be careful with the stuff and don't drink it and you'll be ok. Works awesome to clean tanks. Make sure to neutralize it with baking soda afterward, then spray with penetrating oil, but be careful of the fumes of the penetrating oil.

Moyer Fuel Tank Renu is a good product. Once you've processed your tank with the product it'll keep it from rusting in the future. Look it up?
