    ATC insurance in Nova Scotia

I just decided it was time to go legal and insure my ATC250SX. My TRX250 Fourtrax is $134 per year and the quote I was given by my insurance agent today for the SX is $279. I figured it would be a little higher than a 4 wheeler, but not more than double...that's too much money and I definately can't insure 2 or 3 ATCs.

Does anybody in NS know of an insurance broker who can get me a policy for a 3 wheeler for a more reasonable rate? I would appreciate any leads.

The other question is, does anybody know the penalty for getting caught without insurance on an ATV in NS? I'm thinking it may be worth it to take the risk.

I live in an area where there is a local public trail that gives me access to all other trails right from my back yard. The police have been known to set up spot checks from time to time and I would prefer to ride worry free.

I was told exactly the same thing, that it was considered a motorcycle. It certainly makes me think about converting a 4 wheeler to a 3 wheeler so it can be insured for a much lower rate.

And yeah, I hear ya Tecate250. I've just for the first time, put plates on an off road vehicle, so I've been doing it like you for 31 years. Where I live right now, I have to go on public roads a little bit to get to the trails, which are public as well, and I just don't feel like looking over my shoulder all the time or looking up ahead all the time for a cop. I don't like it, but I would rather relax and not think about it.

Wow, that is quite a bit! Hopefully you can get it through State Farm. Here in New York every ATV/ATC has to be registered even if its only used on your own property. The only exception according to our DMV is if the ATV is used for Plowing ONLY! We also have to insure any ATV/ATC that we use off of our property, even if I am at my brothers my three wheeler has to be insured. I thought we had it tough! Our insurance is approx. 55.00-75.00 a year. It could add up quick if you have a collection. It cost about 12.00 a year to register them after sales tax, plate fees, etc. I know a lot of people who have their own property don't register them, I plan on going out on a few shallow lakes this winter so I'm in the progress of getting mine registered. Our Four Wheelers are about the same price as the three wheelers. Hope it goes well for you, either way not worth losing a trike!

Here in NY we can legally cross a road as long as we are registered and insured but cannot drive down a road. Someone told me ATV's Snowmobiles, etc. can legally be on the roads if they are "officially" closed due to snow. I haven't confirmed that yet but plan on it as it would be good to know!

Yeah, but the RCMP around here allow everybody to run on the back streets to get to the trails...but you have to be legal...which is the reason why I'm trying to be legal. It's totally legal to cross roads too, except for limited access highways. In Quebec, you can drive on the shoulder of secondary roads for limited distances...I think up to 1 km...to get to a trail.

I would like to make 200X (main trail bike) legal to get a pass for private land near me. A local mill (the owners are related) own lots of trails. You need to be registered and insured. I will not be able to use the pass on my 250R since they do not like 2-strokes.

In Alabama, no offroad vehicle has to be registered, and depending on the local police, some areas you can ride through the middle of town on a trike or quad. Anderson, the closest town(well, village really), is incredibly relaxed if you aren't acting stupid or speeding through town, on a quad, trike, bike, or 4x4(UTV).

Although this is a rural southern town, so mainly it matters on respect, and courtesy. But thats the majority of rural Alabama. God I love my home.
This is my trike. There are many like it but this one is mine. My trike is my best friend, and it is my life. I must master it as I must master myself. My trike without me is useless. Without my trike, I am useless. I must ride my trike true. My trike and I know that what counts is not the amount of miles we ride, but the time we ride together. My trike is human in it's own ways, therefore I will learn it as my brother. I will learn it's weaknesses, it's strengths, it's parts, and it's soul.
