    Exclamation Atc 70 axle issues

So, I went to get the 70 out and the back wheels won't turn properly, 1/2 a turn backwards but locked solid forwards, probably the brakes binding.
Tried backing off the adjuster, no difference. Ok, just need to pop the drum off and have a look. Removed the rh wheel and hub, can't shift the axle tube. Tried tapping, heating, and combinations of the two, no go. Anyway, the lh tube turns so I'll start the other side and slide the whole axle out.
Took off the lh wheel, removed the hubnut and the nut took most of the thread off the end of the shaft, then the hub won't come off! Tried a puller, then heat and a but it won't budge.
The back end could do with new bearings while I'm in the process of stripping it, but if I can't salvage this axle shaft are they difficult to obtain?

As they say "When you're up to your butt in aligators, it's difficult to belive the original plan was to drain the swamp!"

Squirt some penetrating oil on the hub splines, then tap with a plastic on the back of them(with the wheel off) in a circle. Works for me every time. I always lithium grease mine when they're apart, they come off super easy after that. As for a replacement axle, I have a couple of spares, but shipping would be a killer!

Yeah shipping would be high due to its weight. It would fit in a cardboard tube though.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give it a try. Replacing the axle will be a last resort but it's nice to know there's a 'safety net'!

    Hi Rob
Its definately a toss-up what'd be cheaper... theres a few availiable on uk-ebay, but the rip off merchants that buy the good bikes and break them for parts seem to want like £70 for them, and its prob a similar price to ship one from the states...

dont you HAVE to remove the axle from the left hand side? ie- remove the brake drum and slide out? or can it go either way if you remove all the sprocket etc...?

Is the axle bent? not that you can turn it to find out...

Y'know, now you've said that I'm not sure! Even if I can shift the spacer I've still got to get the drum off.

It's a possibility, it's not urgent at the moment so I'll go with the penetrating oil first. I'm hoping to get down to Boxgrove quarry nr. Chichester next month (the Br is good to go) depending on work ect., from what I've seen I don't think it's 70 territory.

I've just noticed that in the manual I've got it shows the axle being removed from a machine that is raised off the ground on a centrally positioned scissor jack! Why hasn't it fallen over?

Success! Lots of and heat and it's off. The drum came off quite easily. The lining had parted from the front shoe and run round and jammed under the rear shoe, so a new set of brake shoes and we're away.
Now, does anyone know what the size/thread/spec is for the rear axle hubnut? I can't find anything that fits.

And we're back in buisness! Got the shoes and two new hubnuts Friday and fitted them today, so all I've got to do now is save up to afford the fuel.
Interestingly, various bike shops said they weren't made anymore (probably didn't want to sell parts for a trike?) but they were obtained from a quad dealer as Honda oem parts, and cheaper than the pattern parts which were the type that fell apart. Now I have the Honda part no., it cross references to a CB250 amongst others.
