How are the starter gears?Take the starter cover off and take a look, make sure they arent worn and make sure their all there.Mine was doing the exact same thing yours was and mine was missing a gear plus the starter itself was bad.I got one off ebay for $36 , got a gear, and it started very easily.

Can you hear the starter spin or make any noises?

Try moving the solenoid around, that happened to mine and I moved it and it hasnt given me any issues. If that doesnt help time for a new solenoid. DO THIS FIRST

No. A soleniod will click but not engage. Jump the 2 big terminals with a screwdriver for a quick test.

On my 85 ES the brush plate in the starter motor was torched... Cleaned it up, and it worked once in awhile... Ended up putting a fresh starter in it...
No trikes. Too old, too crippled. Unless I find one I can't live without!

Try jumping the terminals with a screw driver if not take the starter off and hook it up to jumper cables if the starter don't work then take it apart your brushes may be corroded or worn out
