    86 250R questions

Explain to me how the radiator overflow bottle works. The bottle is full and the radiator is low. I've never had a 3 wheeler with an overflow bottle. If your engine gets hot does it use water from the overflow or does it only go one way? What is the benefit to a system like this. On my Tecate I pop the cap and make sure it's full. On a 250R it seems that you have to rely on the overflow bottle because you can't get to the cap.

Can you use an 86-89 TRX250R cylinder head gasket on an 85-86 250R?

My other question is about ASV levers for the 86-89 TRX250R, will these ASV levers work on an 86 250R?

And can you use all stock components with a +1, +2, Durablue axle, or do I need Durablue parts to use it?

    Thanks for the help..

The overflow works just like a car. When it gets hot it pushes coolant into the overflow. When the engine cools down and the pressure starts to go down it sucks coolant back into the radiator. The trx head gaskets will work on the atc's. I used an '89 cr250 gasket back in the day. It was the trick for more compression but could still run pump gas.

I have only used a durablue on a Banshee I had years ago and if I remember I was able to use the stock anti fade.

First off, you can get to the radiator cap, it's just a bit tighter than what you're used to with your 84-85 Tecates. For the coolant recovery system to work properly, the radiator needs to be full to start with. As the coolant heats up & expands, it will flow to the coolant bottle. Then as it cools back down & contracts, it will suck the coolant back into the radiator from the bottle. If the radiator is already low, it will just expand & contract within the radiator. It's also possible that your radiator cap isn't sealing properly, rendering the recovery system inoperative.

I don't know, but I don't see why not, as I don't believe Honda changed the hardware at all up there from '86-89.

I have no idea, as I'm still running the original stock axle.

Doug, double check the hose that connects the two as well. If there is a hole in it somewhere, the hot expanding coolant will find it's way to the overflow bottle but as it cools down and try's to pull coolant back, it would suck air instead. That hose runs pretty close to the pipe, and if run wrong can get easily melted.
