Umm, changed my oil an found a chip. HELP

Ok, so I just drained the oil in my 85 250r and out came a small chip. here's pictures: (penny for reference)

The oil was pretty metallic looking but I used most of a quart of cheap oil and flushed it out. Its aluminum. It shifts through all the gears with no problem.

    Any ideas?

God, thats always scary to find. You can flush the bottom ends with diesel fuel. run for about 30 seconds, then remove all fuel. Replace the diesel with oil, run for a little while, then change very soon, within 10 minutes. After that, run what ever oil you normaly do.

If it was my trike, i would take the clutch cover off and take a look around.

After thinking about it, i still can't figureout what that chuck came off of. I say take the clutch cover off, it may be visable and easy to fix. What ever broke.. will probably just continue to fall apart over time and destroy the rest of the tranny.

Check it with a magnet . If alum (piece of the case) you might be ok but if its a steel part it might be something important .

It looks to me from what I can see in the pictures to have fresh breaks on both sides. So more than likely there is another piece in there. Id tear it apart. Its not worth risking junking a motor that is getting harder to find every day by not taking any action.

First off, thanks to everyone who offered advise. I pulled the clutch cover off and pulled the clutch basket and didn't see any damage. I pulled the motor out of the frame tonight and will work on splitting the cases in the next couple days...

    Thanks hoosierlogger.

Does anyone know if the stator has to come off to split the cases? I got the 3 bolts off that go around the edge of the stator that you can get to with the flywheel on (not the ones that hold the stator on), plus the two long ones for the counter-balancer and all the bolts on the outside.

Ok, so I feel good that I split the case and found NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE but its also gets me that I went through all that for nothing. I guess the chip was from the land of magically appearing mystery chips.

here's the pics, the camera light does funny thing and makes it looks all dirty but it is clean. But whats up with the blue over spray??

gaskets will hopefully be here Saturday...

I't kinda looks like the chip might have come from the area right of the blue overspray, but that could be the flash and silicone mix, also have you checked the bottom of the piston, I am assuming you have but check the inside of the bottom of it as well, that chip came from somewhere, maybe it has been in there a long time, and maybe not best to check every where
