I have an 86 350x and the lights flickered and went out while the bike was running. What elec component runs the lighting? I thought the stator did, but I would think the bike would not run with a bad stator. Can anyone help me out on this?

there are 2 secions of the stator, one half lighting the other half ignition, have you checked the bulbs and regulator? those are more likely where you need to look.
Headlight switch, grounds bad connection you have to go in a pattern of checks. Start the bike up first and start lightly tugging on you harness to check for a bad connection then from there check power going into the switch if all is good check power to the bulb. The best thing is to have a manual so you understand the system.
The FIRST thing I would check is the light bulb....then I would start troubleshooting the rest.
No trikes. Too old, too crippled. Unless I find one I can't live without!

Always start at the weak link, in this case, the build that burns out. If that checks good. I'd check this stuff in this order.
Bulb(s)
Start the bike and check the voltage of the headlight wires. You should get 13-14.5 volts when lights turned on.
Make sure light switch has continuity
Lighting coil resistance should be .1-1ohm

I just wanna go fast. If your not first, your last!!
Reproducing the Tecate CDI. Contact me if you need one. I'm most accessible on FaceBook. You can find me on the 1984-1987 Kawasaki Tecate KXT250 Group.
Thanks for all the feedback. The bulbs are good, I will move to the next sequence of events.

so lights flickered and THEN went out?
Did they flicker relative to engine speed?
like did they get steady when you revved?
That would be more like a regulator connection/ground.
Maybe powersurge killed a fuse?
I'd check all connections as mentioned above
especially grounds.
Battery can also act like a powersoak meaning it acts as a buffer
to the output surges of the ac current from the stator looking lighting coil.
I think there are 2 coils. One for ignition and one for lights.
Never had to go that deep.
