My 225dx caught on fire tonight but why???

I was riding my dx tonight and stopped to do something else and when I went back to start it up it back fired into the airbox and bursted into flames. By the time I was able to get a bucket of water my airbox was toasted and it charded up my already crappy fenders (no big loss just the airbox and filter) So my big question is what needs adjusted on my carb to prevent this from roasting my bike? It seems to run great idles and runs very strong no bogging through out the intire powerband but its hard to start sometimes the only way to get it to start the first time is to put gas down the cylinder. After it gets warmed up you have to hit the throttle alittle when you give it a pull to get it to start. any ideas guys???

Just a guess but maybe a stuck float valve, let a bunch of gas into the engine. Engine was warm enough it allowed you to start it and shot flames back into the air box since there was too much gas in it. When the float valve stuck on my YT there was actually some gas inside the tube from the carb to air box.

Check your intake boot for cracks. It sounds like your sucking to much air. Dumping gas in the cylinder means its not sucking gas from the carb. It could be small crack thats just getting worse over time. I would start there.

After reading x's commets you could have both things playing with you. Clean your carb and look for leaks, backfiring is a air/fuel issue.

Im betting you guys are right about the float that makes sense. It seems like some times its not getting any gas to the carb and other times its flooding its self out. Im going to clean it out just to be safe. I havent even had this bike a full week and I roasted it.

the float needle on the yammi's has a rubber point once it wears it will either stick or not seal closed

was it still running when it was on fire, if so, you could have probably hit the throttle and that would suck the flames into the carb to the motor and if it was not to engulfed in the airbox by that time it may have put that out, i seen that happen before and they hit the throttle and it sucked in the flames. never found out the cause tho

Nope it wasnt running when on fire, just a loud pop then I seen the reflection of fire in my trucks bumper which was setting right behind it then I shoved it out in the drive and ran like hell to get some water. The hole time I was filling the bucket up I could see it burning. Felt like it took forever! Needless to say Im never going to start one up in my garage again. The last time I was riding my buddys 200x the fuel line came off and bursted into flames at about 40mph that was a wild ride too. Fire and 3wheelers seem to go hand in hand for me.

I watched my neighbor when I was a kid burn his garage down putting fuel in his rm 125 after riding it, one little dribble sent it all up into flames

my xr 75 has gone up in flames more times than i can count mainly because the fuel valve leaks on the flywheel and my points spark one time i was riding in town and a store owner ran out with and put it out for me ive tryed to find a new valve but its a hard part to find since i got a 76
