I away use an impact wrench, you will also need a flywheel puller after you get the bolt loose.

Feed a rope in through the spark plug hole to hold the engine from turning. Do it when the piston is on its way up from the the bottom of its travel for the compression stroke so the valves are closed and you don't bend one. Be observant of the valves and don't blame me if you bend one.

take off the othe side of the case and stick a penny in there, one from before 1982. the penny is soft enough that it wont hurt any of the gears.

I just leave the recoil catch on it, and stick a big screw driver through two of the holes. Hang on to the screw driver with one hand and your ratchet with the other. Its always worked for me!

I used a truck once on a poolaris 4 wheeler. Tied about 50 feet of rope to the hitch to get the angle low as possible, tied other end to the fly wheel. Me and a friend leaned the opposite way on the 4 wheeler and buddy hit the gas. It came off fast lol. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED - nothing was hurt, but it could have been.

Recommended: flywheel puller+impact; Flywheel puller + rope in plug hole on compression stroke; Flywheel puller + flywheel holder

Puller is a must I'd say, most engine use the same threads and they are dirt cheap.

i just had this problem yasterday. once i got the nut loose i took 2 handle bar clamps i think to a 200x but any will do i found longer bolts that fit into the pullstart cage on the fly wheel and loosly bolted the clamps backwords on the flywheel with out the cage on then stuck the handle of the ratchet under the clamps with the flywheel nut about half way of maybe less with the ratchet resting on the nut tighten up the 4 bolts equaly and the flywheel will pop of

The most important part people neglect is to oil the pullers threads, it reduces the friction.

I would buy an impact gun before I took off the side cover and needed a gasket unless you've never cleaned the oil screen and or oil filter rotor if your model has one. The rope trick works great like Fabio suggested but it must be on the compression stroke or you could get it hung up in a valve. Not for anyone who doesn't have a clear understanding of a 4 cycle engine........
