    fuel problem bigred

I have a problem with my 85 250es. When i press the start switch or kick start the engine gas flows out the carb from the plastic line out of the float chamber. What can be causing this?

Do you turn on the gas then try to start it??

If so the needle and seat are stuck.

Rebuild kit will have a new needle and seat along with all the jets, gaskets, & Orings. Rebuild would do it.

So you turn on the gas and it flows out, You turn off the gas and it stops right?

A Cleaning might even work for you.

Yup 100% Needle and seat problem then. Take it apart and try cleaning it first. If that doesn't work then rebuild it.

Use a q-tip and tooth paste to 'lap' the seat. Make sure it's all nice and clean. Make sure there is a fuel filter in line. All it takes is 1 nice piece of dust or dirt to keep that needle open.

I've had the same problem on my 250sx. I had already rebuilt the carb and cleaned it a few times so I wanted to try all my options before taking the carb off the bike again so I took the float bowl off and the gas line off and blew compressed air through the inlet. Whatever was in there came out and it's been running great ever since. This can save you a lot of time if it works and solves your problem. If not, the other suggestions will definitely do it.

Nice sx, overflowing gas, took the fuel line off, poured some mystery oil
into the fuel line to the carb and blew it through the carb with the float drain open.

    Lucked out for sure.

I wonder if a little spritz of carb cleaner would hurt.

Worst case is that it has to come apart and cleaned correctly.

For those of you who HAVE rebuilt, what's the kit to have? I see several options around, none of them are expensive by any stretch, I just can't tell which is the best to have for an 85 BR. I'm having the gas pouring out issue as well.
    Thanks,

get the one with the formed gasket. you do not want to fool with the unformed gasket it is a pain to make fit.
figure on spending about $25 shipped for a nice kit. some even include different jets and such.

I used the Moose kit that is all over eBay. Came with both gaskets, jets, o-rings, and the float needle. I believe it was $19 shipped.
