    225DX troubles....... Again

Ok this bike is turning into frankenstien.

Have had the long weekend off so we were riding alot. Friday 4 hours non stop, no troubles. Saturday 5 hours non stop, almost had a rear tire fall off and found out the bearings on the left side of the diff are now loose.

Today I decided to take the rear fenders off and make sure all the carb boots were tight as we were going to hit some water. The bearings are still loose so I was just going for a little ride and play in the water.

Took off and went about a 1/4 mile and had to turn around, forgot the rubbers. Raced back changed boots and headed to meet the brother in laws. Got half way back and it started to miss fire and bog when given throttle. Same problem I had before!!!

Took it back and took off the carb. Everything seems just fine so throw it back on and run it without the air box to see what is happening. Well idles just fine and when I give it throttle the damn thing backfires through the carb again. So its over fueling.

Now from what I know it could be the carb dirty again. I am going to soak it tomorrow and see what happens. Could be the intake valve as well right?

Any help would be great. I actually have a buddy that has the same problem now too so we would really like to get these things fixed

I would check the valves according to the manual it can be any where from .002 to .005 gap, also when you have your carb apart check the rubber tip on the float needle, if it is over fueling it might be sticking open

Valves were ok a week ago. The needle and seat are fine, floats are also set.

I would make sure that your choke inside the carb is not sticking and also check that your main jet is not to big or if someone cleaned it with a torch cleaner or file that will ruin the jets which will make it giv to much fuel. also if that dont work move the clip on the throttle needed up.

I have moved the clip on the needle.

Looked at the main jet and soaked the cab all together.

Wonder if I should try a smaller main???

I do have a main from the timberwolf carb kit I got that was smaller. That would give it less fuel thinking about that now but not sure.

It seems to have gotten louder too. Could that have something to do with valves you think?

Forgot to mention that it ran perfect just before this happened. Heard a little pop right when it started missing. Compression is fine so think I am going to do a valve set and see what happens

Just did a valve set on it and same result.

    Its idles perfect.

If I hold it wide open with the air box on and no filter runs like it did when I bought it.

If I take the air boot off and hold it wide open eventually it will clean out and run right. Only while I am holding it wide open tho.

    Timing & valves are 100%

Guess I am going to have to take the carb off again and try cleaning it up. Dont know exactly what else to do......

you said it got louder?, have you checked the gasket connecting the exhaust header, also did you looses anything in the muffler? I would move the clip on the needle back to normal, drain fuel and put in fresh, also clean out the petcock, and clean carb. Change the air filter to a new one and make sure to lightly oil it, mine has an oiled air filter. Then if all else fails go to a hotter plug are you running a d7ea or d8ea, 8 is hotter, check air filter tubing for a rats nest and last but not least if nothing else works change the main

oh yaeh check timing and cam chain tension as well, might want to check cdi and all your grounds for a fault in them which would cause a weaker spark as well

There basically is no muffler. It was all rotted out. I did have a old spark arrestor that I bolted in the end to quiet it down a bit. Timing and valves are dead on spec I checked them last night and did a valve set. I checked all the wiring and its all good. I am going to pull the carb again and see wtf its going on. IDK maybe there is something lodged in there that I just havent gotten out.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Do what I did and sell the 225 & buy an ATC250SX. I loved my Yamaha, but it was a pain in the butt to start.

This damn thing will fire right up. The amount of riding that I did do in a week was great. I put on at least 20 hours with no problems other then the wheel bearings going and they are original so I wasent too concerned.

Its the carb itself that sucks. Talked to the yammy dealer today and he just chuckled saying alot of people have troubles with these carbs. They have that Sonic bath and he told me I could put it in there for a day free of charge so thats what I am going to do next week.

Af far as anything else I love riding this bike compared to my ol' 200 honda

Choke valve is good with brand new oring. I am familiar with this style of choke.

I am sure that something rattled off in the carb Some sort of gunk that I missed the first time.
