Smile 1983 Honda 185s cam alignment

Ok, the timing is perfect on my engine, it never was off, my only question now is if it is normal for when you let go of the flywheel if the timing mark goes about 1/4 of a link past the notch ? Everything is at TDC when i hold it there, and when i let go it still is, its just that my mark goes a tiny bit past. Also is the TDC mark supposed to be only like half an inch from the Firing mark on the flywheel ? It seems kind of odd but I wouldn't be the one to know.

Hey did you download the service manual from the world class help section? It has pics so you can know what you're looking for. Many times the flywheel has the T on the outside edge, so you can miss it if you don't use a flashlight

As the chain and sprockets wear the cam timing tends to change a little. Also if the head is skimmed the cam timing will change. Anyway the manufacturer's marks are not 100% accurate, but close enough for normal use. If you want precision you have to make your own arrangements and that means verifying the TDC mark with a dial indicator on the piston top, and doing a similar thing with the camshaft. Very fiddly work and not really necessary unless you are racing and looking for the last bit of power. It doesn't sound like you want to but before you go down the route of checking all this in search of the lost power, you need to consider that with a stock cam a couple of degrees out won't make much difference. With a race cam it may but it needs a dyno to measure.

Best thing is to check your compression to be sure your piston and rings are in good shape, check the ignition timing and valve clearances are good and do the normal service routines.
