Any suggestions for getting rust out of the tank of my KLT 160? I've read the battery charger/water/in a bucket thing, just wondered if something else could be done, CLR or something?

1985 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe - stock shortblock, T5, ported head, lots of bolt ons, same parts went 11.80 @ 115 MPH in my SVO.

We did the muratic acid process. 50% acid with 50% hot water and just keep shaking the tank around and keep checking the metal inside. The acid will find any thin spots in the metal. The acid is pretty caustic so make sure you where chemical gloves and don't breath the fumes, and do it outside. When your done with the acid neutrilize it with water and baking soda, rinsing several times. It took us about 2 hours per tank. I also had an older gentleman tell me to use lye water, Drain cleaner and water, and that would be safer. Be careful and good luck, you can't find those tanks anywhere, I had to make new panels for the lower corners as they were rusted through.

Try the KBS coating system, as beets442 mentioned above. I used this stuff in my tank and it does a great job. If you’re looking to just get the rust out and not coat the inside use muriatic acid, which you can find at Lowes or Home Depot in the cleaning supply. It is used for etching concrete. However, I highly recommend coating the inside of the tank after removing the rust. Another product that will dominate rust is On-Off Hull Cleaner. It was recommended by one of my clients who uses all types of acids to recover precious metals. This stuff also works great on aluminum, leaving it with a nice shine. I actually used this in my tank prior to applying the KBS products. It contains muriatic acid, phosphoric acid, and oxalic acid. You can find this stuff at any marina store or you can order it on Amazon.
