the difference is the fork tube diameter. the 86 has bigger tubes which make the triple clamps different too. the triple clamps will interchange though.
The above is correct. All you need is the triple clamp and both forks, everything else will bolt right on. I think but not sure, the '86 will have slightly more travel. I have an '85 triple clamp and left fork, the right fork has a bent upper tube. You can have them cheap if you want them.

Thanks everyone!!!! I understand now. Thanks for the offer Dave I will keep you in mind if the one I have lined up doesnt pan out. Very nice bike by the way. I hope mine will look as good as that one. I have one that is runing now that I would like to restore, I am just torn between working on the one that is running excellent but looking shabby or starting on the Frame on the new one. tuff choices!!! Again, thanks to everyone who has helped me this far!!!

Your starting with just a frame? Thats quite a project. You might try placing an add on here, i think YTZ250#1 has some Z parts along with several others on here and then there's ebay. IMO, since you have one to ride I would start with the frame. Almost everything is still available new but the plastic, if it's yellow you can only get the rear fenders($99.95). I got quite a bit of stuff from partsfish.com
and try to find a real yamaha service manual

yes starting with just a frame. I just purchased the 86' front end, Brakes, Powder coated Yellow Hubs, Swingarm w/shock linkage. Do you know of anyone that will extend the Swingarm +6?? This is the first bike that I will have actually built from the ground up. Should be interesting but I do have a complete bike to go by in case I get in trouble. Ha!! Nice winter Project. I live close to Grass Valley CA and have a "Friend" that works at the Miers MFG. They still make the front and rear plastics. White, Yellow and Black I think. Stay in touch and I will try to keep informed on my progress.
