250sx Tear Down- Discover-Rebuild

Over the weekend the motor for my 250sx I sank awhile back was taken apart. The day I sank it I flushed out with oil and Diesel trying to get it as clean as I could but it was not enough.


The sand in the piston did quite the number and as you can see from my piston there was a little bit of Oil that was making it through the rings. As you can imagine the engine smoked a wee bit

Additionally the filter in the engine was packed, it was So packed that it actually broke through the screen as you can see from the pics. The fellow tearing apart the motor with me was amazing that it still actually ran and turned over.....Good Ol'Honda


I will be steering clear of large puddles, I am scared of those things now. My 250sx is a strange bike now, again from the pics.


I have a 250es differential with a 250es motor and a 250sx top jug..... essentially I now have a 250es in a 250sx body.

I still have the 22 inch tires so I am slow, but I have torque. This bike is retired now, he is going to stay on the farm as a hay pulling bike and for bringing feed buckets to the horses.

Where was your air filter when all this happened?

The air filter was good. It was the problem of sinking too much and the engine stalling and all the water going in through the exhaust.

I wish all the 3 wheeler owners would stay the hell out of thin mud/nasty water like that. It gets in any loose place on the trike..... Fortunately, you tore it down, most guys just keep riding them till they die.

Is that metal in the puddle where your pointing? And what caused the piston to get damaged? a hung up valve?

@crasher- Yeah I learned from a really good mechanic that when something is smoking or sounding bad....STOP DRIVING IT ! I waited about 4 months to tear it apart but it was worth it. That thing I am pointing it at a cake of mud that was under the screen....that was in addition to all the mud I took from on top of the screen (you can see in one of the pics)
I was lucky , there was no metal bits breaking off anywhere in the engine, there was just EXTREME wear on the piston and jug from the sand rubbing up and down, up and down.

The tear down and rebuild was 100% needed.

So far all 3 of my sx's are running well...if I stay out of sand and water, change oil and filters all the time and wash them, I think the engines will never need a rebuild.
