    185 problems

My 83 Honda 185s isn't running to great. It starts up fine and idles good for about 5 minutes and then it auomatically picks up idle speed after I press the throttle. When it goes into gear it drives on it's own. The idle speed keeps getting higher until the engine cuts. I noticed lots of air bubbles in the fuel line and don't know if that has to do with anything. Also on the bottom of the carb there is an overflow valve thing, should this be open or closed. I would appreciate any help with this, thanks.

the valve should be closed, IF its a drain for the bowl. is there a spring on the idle adjust screw? there should be. its keeps the screw from turning, from the vibrations. is the throttle lever/cable sticky? or the linkage at the carb? might be something there you could lube.

after checking the simple stuff^^^.....you may have a air leak as well. check the O-ring between the carb and the manifold.

here is a link to a diagram of your carb and everything its supposed to have, it may help you.

Also check to make sure the gas cap is venting correctly . Run it till it starts acting up then remove the cap and see if it clears up .

Thanks for the help I will try that. But I can see a crack on the carburetor manifold that connects to the engine is that a problem?

yes, air leak will cause crazy idling. as its running spray carb cleaner around the carb and intake area. If the idle changes you got a leak around that spot.

are you sure its a crack? and not a seam? can you post a pic of it? if it is cracked, there's your problem.

here is a couple pics of the trike ( its pretty beat up) and the pic of the intake crack it is really hard to see unless you enlarge the picture. But i can see a small crack going vertically its not a seam because the seams go horizontally.
