Got a GPS yesterday.

A Garmin 62s. Been researching and waiting for about a year, figured it was time to commit. I'm very happy and would recommend it to anyone. The interface is pretty decent. I really like Garmin Connect and Basecamp. Both very nice apps!

I hate them and have seen them fail too many times. I'll stick with my trusty map.

My buddy uses one and he found a Beavis and Butthead add on so they tell you your directions. I thought that was pretty cool.

A friend of mine on a trip here from Kentucky went about 100 miles out of their way by following one. I drove a truck for 5 years everywhere in the US with a map and didn't get lost. I may be special though.

And you're right hate is the wrong emotion.. I'll go with intense dislike.

They have a lot of benefits depending on the use. As a "road" map I know people using them who got lost more than once. If hiking they are great, you can mark "way points" and they will lead back to where you started. I think most of the issues are "as the crow flies" isn't how the road goes and construction or updated road names present some problems but overall still handy to have, you can use the compass option if you know where you are heading to get around "detours"!

Yeah, once I was listening to the mapping lady on my phone and went at least an hour out of the way, it sucked for sure. Problem here is it's hard to get an accurate map of any trails. Most are pretty outdated. So I figure I can make my own for fun. That and see just how fast the R actaully is

I have a garmin nuvi in my truck.

I dont use it for travelling as much other then to annoy the wife with the funny voices I downloaded on it lol. One thing I do like about it is when I used to go to the big cities around here It was nothing but a fight because I didnt know where I was going and had her reading the map. Well we got lost alot and there was alot of yelling lol.

Now with the Nuvi I just find the address and punch it it and I am off.

GPS is not very reliable or efficient. But if used as a side kick or back up and I use common sense and never grow to trust it completely it has always helped me get to where I am going. Sure it might take me out of my way slightly, but if i am totally clueless on where im going it will get me there.

I also use it as a map when im exploring new back roads or something. it can be a fun tool.

This kind of reminds me of a story in 2008.

My wife and I were taking a trip back to manitoba when we had to stop and let the dog use the washroom. We stopped in a very small town to let him go. At this time they were busy changing the number 1 hwy to 2 lanes between Virden Mb and Regina Sk.

A small car stopped and asked me where Melita was. I told her to follow the 83 because I was familiar with the area. I then noticed the GPS in her window. I told her to just punch it in. She then tells me she is afraid to use it because a month earlier it had ran her off the road. Seems she was on the #1 and it told her to continue straight. It was night and somehow she didnt see the detour signs routing traffic all to the east bound lane due to the construction and she drove through the signs at 60 MPH.

Ha ha ha, Bottom line is she was a dumb bell and I felt alot safer on the road knowing she was on another highway!!!

My GPS is super old, outdated, and doesn't even know where I live (doesn't know any address on my road, any number you put in takes you to the start of the road)
It has failed to take me to many private addresses. But I love the thing and it has gotten me out of a few jams.
If you know how to use it, then its great. there has been a few times it has tried getting me to die, but once the numbers dont match you just resort to the old school of driving...with your eyes.
