question on steering stem bearing replacement '83 200E

    '83 200E
I am replacing my factory steering stem bearings with a tapered bearing kit. I know how to do it but my question is, where should I put the zerk fitting? in the bottom cup?

I don't believe there is room for the zerk in the stem itself?

seems to be the only place I could get to a zerk with the grease gun without much trouble is in the bottom cup?

    any ideas much appreciated.......

I put tapered bearing in my 81 250R,no grease zerk.If you somehow put a fitting on the neck, all you would do is fill that cavity with grease. I usually tear my junk down and hand pack the bearings(in the winter when its too cold and too much snow to do anything else)Just my .02$ hope it helps

i have never seen a zerk fitting for steering stem bearings. Since the neck is high on the machine, it really doesnt see much dirt and water intrusion, so every few yrs at the most, you could just regrease them. I have pulled apart many 25 yr old machines, and the steering stems are usually spotless with nice clean factory grease. Not to say you couldnt put one on. let us know if you do.
