My opinion on an XR600 is that it's a good, reliable bike. Mine starts every time, never has left me stranded, and handles my style of riding. My only complaint is it's heavy. I live in western Pa, and right now since it's fall we have alot of leaves down on the trails. When they get wet the XR is a handful, she tends to plow instead of turn. As for a used motor look around I've seen them on Ebay before.

I've been looking for a XR600 for a while too. The 1992 and up models have upgraded brakes and suspension. There is an '83 just down the road from me too. Looks good too.

learn how to use the decompression--I broke my ankle trying to start one a couple of years ago. I wish I could say I took a nasty wipeout or something but nope--I was kicking the thing!!!!

I'm not 100% sure of the interchangeablilty between the XR and the XL, and earlier years of the XR600 had two carbs compared to the later ones with a single. Try www.justxr.com. You'll probably find what you're looking for there.

    Xr600

I know on the later model 650's, the R had alot more compression than the L model, and the L also has the lighting coil on it. Not sure if this applies to your 85. I just about bought an XR650R (99), but the thing is just so damn top heavy compared to an XR400R or yamaha's 350 enduro.
there is nothing wrong with the bikes, just depends on what you are used too.

our shop can rebuild the motor you have there and you could be riding very soon . as for are they a good bike? pros... very dependable (honda) very good handler for its size and weight cons....parts are very expensive and hard to find, weight, lack of real power vs. weight for a 600cc engine.
I love my TT600R yamaha. you want to see power at its finest for a thumper this is it. pure torque!!!mine will outrun about anything within reason in an 1/8 mile run.
these are just my opinons but you can look at a dyno print out and see yamaha has a big h/p advantage. I ride in the mountains and no one wants to try to handle that beast in tight terrain but I see it has a challange and love it when the kdx gets old.
