A little bit of engine carnage...

I'm helping tear down a 250R motor for a rebuild. I find myself having to laugh at the condition of this "professionally" rebuilt motor which was recently acquired. Just a couple pics here, but I figure this is enough to get the point across:

Got the cases split. The crank seal you see in the picture above was rubbing on the crank. Here is what it looked like from the inside of the engine. It is sorta hard to tell from the pictures, but this thing was cocked in there by about 1/2".

Here is the crank and bits from the bottom end. Luckily, the case looks like it is fine. There are some nicks in the bottom, but I think they can be smoothed so as to not cause a problem. The case isn't cracked and the mating surfaces look good (well, as good as they can look being as dirty as they are.

i'm not too well versed on honda engines or any other that has them sleeve cover deals over the counter weights. i have worked on alot of 2 smoke engines and have never seen that.what are they and what do they do?

I'm not sure what those "covers" do either, or why the crank is designed the way it is. It is funny, I always just thought they were solid counterweights, but these are way more complex than I expected. This crank definitely took some serious abuse. I figure it had to be on a previous motor failure, since the piston is all intact (not good, but all in one piece).

The machine wasn't purchased from a board member (that I'm aware of anyway).

after looking at the pics again i am willing to guess that them sleeve deals are for vibration dampening. anyone know? I have never worked on an r engine but will be good to know when I do

The R cranks have them and they normally are not an issue. I do not know there function, I just believe it's how they are assembled. RTV and improperly installed seals are though............

God, what a sh!t arse "professionally" built motor.

    My thoughts, exactly!

This is one of those situations that reinforces my attitude of wanting to do repairs myself. The engine was this way when purchased, and I know that crappy shops are probably the exception, but I really don't trust many places to do work for me unless I've seen other things they've done.

On the bright side, when this motor is all back together, I'll know EXACTLY what's in it.

As far as I know the honda crank halves are counterweighted instead of full circle, and honda presses the the "tin cans" over them to reduce crankcase volume. HH
