Kick start lever screw always strips on me,.. -_-

I've had to transfer a kick start lever to my 300 from a 250 twice and each time when I take the lever off I usually remove the screw that keeps the lever tight to the splines off all the way, and when I go to tighten it it never seems as tight as it was before I took it off.. Like the 2 ends of the circular part with the splines on the lever never meet each other and I don't think the lever is gripping the shaft tightly enough now. Anything I am doing wrong?? I believe it also is ruining the threads on the inside of the lever..
