Replacing shifter shaft on 1983 250r

1982 frame, 1983 engine. I have a 1982 shifter that doesn't clear the crank case, and from what I hear a 1983 shifter won't clear the frame/foot peg. I still have the shift shaft out of the 1982 engine, what all is involved with replacing the shaft? The 1982 shaft is longer. I was thinking of doing a custom shifter but honestly if I don't have to spend money for more than a new clutch cover gasket I don't see why I shouldn't just do it right if I don't have to split the cases.

There was no need to start a new thread, you should have just kept your old one going.

You don't have to reply to your own thread to subscribe to it.

You need to get a manual and see if you can handle the job. You can download some of them free from this forum.

This one is asking directly for a complete idea of what I will be doing, and preferably a tutorial or atleast some pictures. The other one was asking if it was possible.

Sounds decent. I'll take a peek at it today and if everything looks simple I'll order a gasket

It would be much easier to buy a 83-84 shifter. It will clear the pegs fine I have done it and would be much easier and cheaper than removing and replacing the shift shaft. You have to remove the engine from the Atc. Take off the side cover and the shaft pulls right out. You don’t have to remove the clutch to do it.
