    Unhappy My poor atc 70

i bought a sweet little 85 atc 70 that ran great up until yesterday. i rode it last week no prob. parked it and it wouldnt start yesterday. i take out the old plug and after about 1 or 2 turns it was very loose coming out. basically its stripped now as a new plug and even that old one wont screw back in and stay tight. also, i found it magically has no spark either. so first i need to repair the head. id prefer to try and heli-coil it ON the Atc. i heard its been done succesfully if your careful and use a few tricks to keep the metal out of it from drilling. I went to NAPA and they did not have heli-coil repair kits for it. Can someone point me in the right direction?? Something i can order of ebay would be fine im having trouble finding what i need. once i get a plug in it that will tighten i can work on the spark issue. If i have to take off the head is it a PITA or easy? never did it. Also, how about drill/tap up to the next plug size? will that work?

come on guys give me SOMETHING here. have any of you drill/tapped with the head on? or should i just swap heads. Is it fairly straight forward? I cant find a Heli-coil kit anywhere . Everywhere I go they tell me its too small and they dont carry it. Or should I drill tap up to a ATC 90/110 spark plug?? NEED suggestions thanks

You might try a head shop. I know there is a local shop that said they could tap and helicoil one of my engines without even taking it apart.

do you make it out to hamburg ever? I know carquest on camp stocks helicoils not to sure on the sizes but if they dont have one klispie's engine machine shop is right across the street and if they don't have it they will get it. I'm pretty sure you will have to take the head off anyway since the installation tang or whatever you would call it needs to be cut off the insert after its installed

yea camp road isnt far from me. i go to hamburg honda alot. there is a carquest just down the road from me on transit rd. i should try there. also, the tang has a little indent to help it break off i believe. i figure i should be able to rig something up to bust it off and get it out without it falling into the motor. i'll try carquest. i was thinking maybe just running a 10mm tap through it that maybe it would rethread and work. im guna try a few things hopefully sumthing works. suprised i cant just find a kit online. i found a time-sert kit but it was almost 250 bucks. i only paid 300 for the whole trike

if you mean the carquest at clinton forget it. they will probably ask: what do you do with this coil thing now? I have never had any luck there.I will stop at the one on camp to check the sizes they have in stock.

yes thats the one im talking about. that would be really cool if you would do that!! post up if you get a chance to stop in and lemme know. they wouldnt happen to sell the tap i would need also would they? i found something online like a stepped tap so it does it all in 1 job. no drilling before tapping. well anyways lemme know if u make it in there

Iwent there this morning and they had 10mm but they were 1.25 and 1.50 pitch I think you need 1.0 The spark pug inserts are different than the regular helicoils and they could get them but the kit came with 24 inserts which I think is about 23 more than you need. I would try klispies on camp rd. possibly jan-cen but they seem to not stock very much there. hope this helps a bit. also a kit with the drill and tap and installation tool will probably cost more than having klispies put one in for you

thanks for checking that out for me. yea your right i need 1.00 . I picked up a 10mm tap yesterday thinking maybe it would clean up the flattened threads and bite. well it cleaned them up but its still very loose and didnt work. jan-cen is right down the street from me. im minutes away but they have never been able to be of much help to me in the past. but i can try. if i had klispies do it would they want the head off or bring them the whole bike and have them do it on? i was thinking today of drilling/tapping it up to an ATC 90 plug. I read elsewhere on the internet that guys have done this with success while leaving the head on. its a 12mm plug

yea, then you use a ngk D8HA or a D6HA for a hotter heat range. its a quick fix. I know a guy who could fix it with a heli-coil or a timesert, let me know, I emailed him for a price, should be pretty cheap

I think klispies could do it wit the head on. the trouple you may run into going to a bigger plug is the reach. If you need to pull the head It's a piece of cake to put back together. there is a dot on the cam gear and one on the head line em up and your good. I use to be able to tear it down and reassemble in about 1/2 an hr

yea, I think on a atc70 you just have to pull the fender, carb and exhaust, loosen chain, slide cam out, 4 head nuts, thats it.
