What To Look For When Buying ATC70 ???

Just found an ATC 70 for sale locally. From decals, looks to be an 84 year model. Seller just got it today, as it belonged to a friend of his that passed away. My kiddo, who is 14 months old needs this in a couple of years so he can ride along with daddy on his 250r (at least that's what I told my wife !!). Sooooo, ad says it needs some work. I text him (or her, not sure), and seller says that it needs tires, and the recoil starter needs work. From the pic, rear fenders need to be replaced as well. What's the parts availability for these, and what should a decent running unit bring ?? I am thinking it would be worth buying, and completely go through it to get it ready for him to ride in a couple years. Seller has it priced at $175..... I wouldn't mind having $500-$600 or so in the whole unit, new tires, rear fender, repaint frame, go through carb, freshen engine if needed, etc. What do you guys think ?? Do-able ??

Id jump on it for $175 if you got the time and money to get to it and it seems like you got a little time till the kido is ready, Im sure you could pull it off! Where there is a will there is a way!!

Thats what I was thinking.... OK 70 owners, anything in particular I need to look at / check / test ??? Like known frame problem areas, axle / bearing problems, engine tests (oil level / appearance, compression test) etc. ??? In other words, costly stuff....

For that price i would jump on it. Fenders are pretty cheap for new maiers, tires are cheap, rewinds cost a fortune so get all parts from them that you can. tanks are pricey so if it is bad get it sealed and fixed. I have 2 84's and a 74 the later ones are much easier to get parts for. plus it is a 4 speed.

look for a bent frame or forks. a tell tale sign is that the front fender has rub or scrap marks from the studs on the head of the motor.

Well, it followed me home. Fender has rubbed at some point, but has at least 3/4 clearance now....fuel tank looks nice, but has rust holes on the bottom, so it's toast. Tires are fried, dogs that swing out from recoil starter are missing, but everything else seems there except e-clip that holds the starter all together, needs new plastics, someone attached another seat over the factory seat. Ok, enough about the bad. Engine seems to have mucho compression, as you could put it in gear, and push it with your knee on the grab bar, and the tires slid most of the time. Wheels, frame, all guards, etc seem to be ok and in place. I'll try to snap some pics later. I got it for $125.....I was ok with that...

No problemo. I need to decide how bad it really is, and if it's worth my time to repair it first. You'll be the first to know if I decide to get rid of it.
