Welcome to the boards! Sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Restoring his machine will be a great way to remember him. There is a wealth of information on this site. If you have any questions during your restore, don't be afraid to ask. And be sure to post pictures of your progress!

Looks like a great starting point with lots of potential! If you're going to break the cases open, spend the time to retrofit the kickstarter to avoid/prevent stripping the gears.

I'm not sure what happen but the motor was rebuilt on his trike and I'm guessing the it jumped time i pulled the cover where it says cdi the bolt holding it together had came loose so it was free spinning. The piston came up and hit the spark plug since that happen the trike has sit. Recently I traded off some stuff and ended up with that 85 bike I figured it would be awesome for parts. As far as I know my Farther in laws motor was rebuilt top and bottom before the piston hit. Any ideas what might have happen before I open it up?

Welcome! 1st off the piston prolly didn't hit the plug. More than likely a valve did, with the pistons help! Either way, your tearing into it. The cam bolt being loose could have thrown off your ignition timing, but not your mechanical timing. There are manuals available free on here. Follow it and you'll be fine. Any questions ask! And we will walk you right thru it! I can tell your gonna do a very nice job! You will more than likely be looking at 2 valves,a timing chain, rings and hone or bore and piston. Gaskets and valve seals. It won't be too hard. Good luck!

Sounds like it jumped time when the cam sprocket came loose, and broke a valve against the piston then the valve hit the plug.
You could have a hole in the piston, bent rod or even damgaed valve guides at this point. Open her up and see. You may just want to freshen up that other engine and use it, if you dont care about the numbers matching.
Good luck and looks good so far.

I already got a shop manual for it I've been reading and just going to take my time and take the top end off find the problem. The other motor is complete but getting pretty weak plus it has a hard time going into first gear. I already am going to need to use the head off it because I stripped the threads for the spark plug getting the plug out.

Mosh and 007 are right, you jumped mechanical timing and ate a valve. If you do the work yourself $250 max.
Have fun, I think I'm plannin a 200x build or maybe another 85 250R since atc007 stole mine, lol

    Update!

Update OK been gone with the Military but here is some new pics of the restore been working all morning on the Motor. Turns out when the motor jumped time it beat a valve and burnt a hole in the piston severe damage on the head as well.... But the bottom end is in very good shape no issues. I'll post pics of the damage in a bit.
