if you dig home made! that works!!

well i made this maybe 8 months ago! was gonna do a vid of it when i got it all buttoned up and pc'ed, but with the recent threads on tire changing being a hot topic, i couldnt hold out. wanted to share it with those who might appreciate it. I cant take credit for the design, these types have been around in some form or another. everything used was salvaged from the parts bins at work. the plate and round stock my dad gave me compliments of NYS!! the plastic cones and rim lock i did buy from the guy who produced a version for sale. i designed mine off of what i saw on his website tirestripper.com. if i had a lathe i could have made some cones. and the lock is simple enough to make i just couldnt find material thick enough and he was willing to sell me one. here's the process with pics as we go......

the base- center post is from a universal weight machine that was crushed when a tree fell on my dads garage! bolted through the bottom. tabs welded to base to hold the 3 unistrut legs.

9" 350x rim installed with small cone and piece imade to tighten it out of a pipe nipple and union. would like to improve this piece, but it works! large cone is for larger hub openings. 25 yr old original tire!!

the breaker bar- its 1 1/4 round stock. i had a thinner one originally, and the first oem tire i tried it bent. rigid couplings and some angle i cut up and ground to shape make up the head. the welds arnt the best, but i have very little expierience, this was by far the most welding ive done. some arnt burnt in far enough, but its held fine.

i have a schedule 80 pvc coupling pressed inside the rigid coupling for smooth rotation!!

    and then........

    we break the bead..

always a pleasant surprise when the slime is there!!
now these balloon style tires are a prick, cause they want to fold over the rounded edge and the head wants to slip back. it helps to leave a bit of air in the tire. but thats fun when it pops with the slime in there. if the head was a little narrower it might help. you learn a few tricks as you use it.

    proceeding....
you take the tire off install the rim lock which rests against a leg to prevent the rim from spinning while trying to take the tire off. flip it reinstall and break the bead on the other side.

the next piece of the puzzle.......

demounting the tire-push the tire down into the dropped center of the rim on one side, hook the head under the lip of the tire. this bar is heavy, takes a bit to man handle it. not like the nice aluminum one i copied it from!
bring the bar down over the center post and rotate around. pops right off!

pull the tire to the top of the rim and repeat with the bottom lip.

what a damn mess that slime makes!!

Nice job! Now I have a(nother) project!! this design sure beats my current bead breaker. It just breaks the bead, no feature for popping the bead off of the rim.

Nope, slime doesn't dry. I only use it in emergencies. I'll pull a tire and patch it first.
