ATC 185 will not start

I recently bought a 1980 atc 185. I rebuilt the engine, bored it out and put a new piston in. After reassembling the engine and remounting it, i cant get it to start. there is spark and gas is getting to the engine. is it possible that the cam is installed wrong, i installed it with the piston at TDC. Any ideas?

for some reason, the problem seems that the cam chain has no tension on it , it spins freely, any ideas? i really need your help

Did you follow the procedure in the service manual when putting it back together? It lays it out step by step and makes it hard to mess up...

hey, in the diagrams, it looks like i will need to remove the flywheel. anyway to do this without a puller? Thanks

if u get lucky It might come off without any Problems, I had one I just needed a flywheel puller. They pull right off but some get stuck on there.i made one with a Strip of Metal and 2 bolts with a socket in teh center.

Sounds like the cam chain came off the sprocket on the crankshaft while you had it apart. You shouldnt have to pull the flywheel to get the chain back on the sprocket. Pull the head and you should be able to fenangle the camchain back on the crank sprocket

I don't remember if that one takes a puller or a bolt that threads in to push it off the crank..... If it's a puller, you can get a steering wheel / harmonic balancer puller from AutoZone for about $20.... I guess you could make one out of some scrap metal but the time it will take you could buy a real one and then you will have it: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...er=555524_0_0_

If it's the bolt that threads in, you just need a large metric bolt with the right pitch

It will depend on what your flywheel looks like to determine which to use

Its a 185, its a dry run flywheel, you need a puller that screws into the center of the flywheel, as for the cam chain not moving, ive had this happen to me when assembling my 200s and bros 185, usually happens when i run the chain back up threw the side of the cylinder, and it comes off the bottom sprocket, so you got to dick around with it again to get it back on, what i do is keep the cylinder on with the cam chain threw it and let the chain slack drop into the case and spin the flywheel slowly untill the chain starts to move threw your fingers since your holding it and preventing it all from going into the case. Soo you have to remove the engine from frame and pull head off again and do like i said...shouldnt take more than a few tries.

Thanks to everyone, i took the flywheel of and reset the cam chain. I readjusted the timing and re assembled everything. It started right up. Any tips on breaking the engine in? Thanks

There a many schools of thought on proper break-in, but I always do what the manufacturer recommends, which usually goes something like this....


Vary the throttle, no long sustained periods at a steady throttle range. If it smells/feels like its running a little hot the first couple times you run it, shut it down and let it cool for a bit as necessary. Once you get a tank of fuel through it this way, it should be all set. Oh, and it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, keep an eye open for oil leaks and check the oil level each time you go to run it. You really should pull the stick every time, not just in break-in. But, during break-in you might want to keep a bit closer eye on it till you make sure everything is ok. You may burn a little oil during break-in till the rings seat in all the way too...
