stock 86 250R atc beats stock 08 450R at Sandhill, MS

Hey guys. I bought a beat to shyte 1986 250R about 1 year ago. The clutch was bad, the swingarm was cracked and welded, rear carrier and bearings were bad, front fork seals were bad, no fork boots, aftermarket handlebars, tank bleached very very badly but none of the OEM plastic was cracked, very high compression on the engine, case saver mounts solid, and frame solid with no welds . So anyway, over the past year I have fixed everything except havent been able to find the OEM rear grab bar and the bike looks pretty damn good and pretty close to new. I have taken in the woods and through a ton of mud and it has always done great but never really been tested against fast bikes and fast riders. So I brought it to Sandhill ATV park in Perkinston, MS and let a buddy take up the track a few times (I had never had sand tires on a bike before and had no helmet which is a requirement on the drag strip). I (and alot of other spectators) was pretty shocked to see this old 250R atc with curved paddles beat up on a 450R with an experienced rider with straight paddles. The bike did great and I had a 2 offers to buy it and one guy trying to trade me his z400 suzuki on the spot. Anyway, a modded built to hell and back 450R showed up and spanked my old bike and everyone else pretty bad. So I have this extra motor in good running condition in my garage that I got off of ebay. I am wanting to send it off to have it built so I can come back and smoke the guy on the modded bike. I have been talking to ESR out in LA and was wanting some feedback from members on here about if I should do a port and polish with thin head gasket, stroker, 310, or 330. I dont want to change my factory swingarm out or extend it and still want to ride the bike everywhere (meaning I have no interest in turning it into strictly a drag bike).

1. I would prefer to keep the stock look. (stock jug and head)
2. Dont want to have to run race gas
3. The 310 build might be a little cheaper than just a port and polish or stroker

I am looking at getting a new carb for the upgradeed motor (prob a 38 or 40mm airstryker or something)

I will do the 310 kit but if it will end up being unusable power because I dont want to extend the swingarm then I guess its not worth it.

I'm not dead set on using ESR but they seem to have a good rep so if you know of another good shop with good prices that does good work I'd want to talk to them.

First off, I dont know how long youve been riding trikes but should always have a helmet on especially on a machine like that. I wouldnt even recommend doing any kind of crazy stuff to the motor until you invest in one. To many people get hurt bad on these doing stupid stuff and thats why they are outlawed. With that said and hopefully sunk in go all out and throw a 330 kit and new carb, pipe and anything else that will make you scared to ride it then sell it to me for cheap!! Ha ha. Your gonna need extensions for all that though and maybe race fuel too!

I own a helmet and grew up riding three wheelers (Im 35 yrs old) but forgot it at the house. At this place a helmet is only required on the drag strip. everywhere else you are good to just ride plus it is still pretty damn hot down here for a helmet.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my 250R beats my 2007 raptor 700R too. I thought for sure the 700 would eat it but nope I was wrong.

I'll be alittle help hopefully first what pipe you running? If you get esr work done go with the ESR atc5 pipe it worked best for me. Second, what type of overall power do you want? Top end? Bottom end? I ran a +2 swingarm on a stroked 250r and it was awesome even in the woods, also what else will you do to the motor? Crank seals? bearings? What type of gearing will you run? Gearing is a huge priority

I am running fmf gold series pipe and fmf power core silencer. They will most likely rebuild the bottom end when it is at the shop. I want as much power as is usable with the stock swinger of course. I was gonna ask around and see what tooth sprocket combo would be best for a 1000' track. Right now the bike is in sixth gear at the finish line.

On one hand, I have a great looking stock motor that makes great power and kicks ass. I really like the OEM look and it would be cool to have a sleeper motor that looked stock atleast but since I already have a nice stock motor then maybe I can get the ESR 310 jug but I'm just weighing my options here.

Oh yeah, I will probably do the mid range porting because I dont necessarily want the low end or all out drag porting either

it is jetted perfect. I have done all the work on this bike myself (including wet sanding plastic) in my garage but want this engine done right and professionally so am willing to spend some money and send it off. So you think the ESR pipe and silencer are worth the money, eh?

Look, you come on a ATV forum that is very strict about helmet policy and post you do not wear a helmet. So do you expect people not to razz you for it?

I know that sometimes taking correction is hard to do, and to many it is a pill they can't swallow usually because they are too busy arguing about it to listen to sound advice.

These guys were just looking out for your safety and promoting a poisitive image for trike riders, and you reply with a blow up response and start throwing names around.
You say your are 35, but you acted like a 12 year old with that reply.

And I dont care how long you have been riding. You will get bit. My 50 year old friend that I am sure has logged way more hours on a trike than most, went down 2 weeks ago on a little rock. It never should have happened, but it did, and the trike landed right on top of him and smacked his helmet. His head would have looked like roadkill on the highway had it not been for the helmet.
So count your blessings for you helmetless luck this far, and dont cry when you have to eat through a straw for not wearing one, and leave the vulgar name calling at the curb.

I have no problem at all with your message or oldskool83's either. Those guys just came across as being pricks. No big deal, I dont have to get along with everybody. A simple message saying "you should be wearing a helmet" or something to that effect would have been sufficient to get their point across but both of those guys insulted me. It's cool. I'm done with it now and would like to get back on topic and get some advice about how to proceed with this build.
