My 1984 Honda atc 200x ice racer build...

Well I have wanted to do ice drags for a # of years now and just never committed to it. lots of the ice drags fall on weekends that I have snowmobile shows, so it has been hard to get to them. There are great ice drags about 2 miles from my house so it is time, also at the one snowmobile show in Manitowoc WI they have an awsome snow drags that are going on during the vintage snowmobile show.
I started with an 84 200x frame, 8 inch over swing arm, and a 400cc Honda street bike. Put them all together and this is what I have so far. I am not usually a fan of steet bike engines in atv's but for this purpose they are the best engines. The engine fit in the frame mostly, had to grind some for starter clerance. The Rear engine mount is shared and in the same place as the atc engine just spaced differant, so that was nice. made the front mounts, and will make custom top mounts.
I had to use an 81, 82 250R tank as the engine is so tall the 200x tank was nowhere close to fitting. It is pretty neat the way the valve cover is shaped it fits the frame perfectly.
In these pics I have it going together, I worked on it alot yesterday and took some pics of the progress, I will post those soon. I ended up useing differant fenders and had to cut the frame up some to get the carb to work, I also had to make a custom intake. There was just nowhere to get the carb in. Today I will start remaking the frame. I cut the small down tube out by your right foot. The one the brake stuff goes on. Instead of one tube I am going to come up on each side of the carb with a tube so it will curve out and look like a Y. Here some pics.

Here are some more pics from what I got done yesterday. I also used this set of rear fenders, These came on a 200x I got years ago and fit like crap, they are aftermarket plastic and I do not know the brand. I choose these because the exhaust will have to come arond the front join into one and run under the carb on the out side of the frame and go into the Kerker tip that I have on the trike now, and I did not want to cut up a nice set of factory fenders to clear the exhaust. I also fired it up for the first time last night, sure does not sound like a 200x. It will stay rough looking till next summer I might do something with the tank but not worried about the frame for now. With the carb right behind my leg it will be nice for winter starting I can just put my hand on the ram tube for extra choke. The carb has a idle adjustment and everthing when the choke is on, the choke knob is on the left side mounted in the hole the shock resevoir mounted to, between fender and frame easy to reach. I will make a battery box where the air box should be and it will house all the street bike stuff, battery, selonoid and fuse block. it will also have a soild strut instead of a shock.

What is the year and make of the Honda that the motor came from? Did the carburetor fit without any modifications?

I am not sure on the year I did not get the bike frame. This engine was bought with a bunch of other stuff. the engine was in a Honda atc 200 most likely a hard tail back in the early eagties and pulled out and shelved after it was crashed lightly. As far as the carb fiting no. If you look in the pics you will see a custom intake and boot and the carb sits right where the one frame tube should be, there was no other way to do it. Also the tank had to be tweaked to clear the carb. I even tried a couple styles of Mikuni's and they were just as tall. Once this is all done the engine will be painted black and to the untrained eye, you should have to look hard to notice it is a twin 400. I am going to order a set of G-force hubs for it also, that will make it almost 7 inches wider in the rear than it is right now. I have a set on my 86 200x that gets trail riden alot and they are holding up great, so I know they will take straight line drags.

Got the frame tubes all cut and tacked into place and got a rear strut made. Sits the same as in the pics but now soild. I had to do all the frame supports to the rear of the carb and up, it is soild and strong just looks a little differant. I need to make a support off the top engine mount and frame to help support the weight of the carb and intake and incase my leg hits it. I will take some more pics in the morning. Feels pretty neat when you sit on it with it so low, long and with the wider bars. The bars came off an xlt indy and are 3 feet wide almost and super low..

Wow this this is cool. If I was going to cut/stuff a big motor into a trike it would be into a 84x because they are plentiful and I just love how they ride. Great job man!

Got the top engine mount made and a bracket welded to the intake that bolts to the engine mount to support the weght of the carb and intake. Then had to put it all back together to make sure everything fit yet. I still have to burn all the frame tubing in as it is only tacked in place and then i am going to start on the exhaust. Everything is taking a little longer to do because I am trying to mantain a factory look, that is why I am using all Honda stuff also. Will take some pics of progess tommorrow..
