    Should I buy...250R

Going to look at an '85 Honda 250R today. Guy says last time he rode it the top end went out and says it won't run now. I am new into the 2-strokers, but have done tons of engine work, so what should I look for specifically? I'll check over the rest of the trike, but the top end is my main concern to how much it will cost to get back running. He's asking under $500 for it and I can't spend too much with a newborn in the house...

If it's just a typical top end job, usually around $200 to get her back up and running again! Take the plug out and see if anything jumps out at ya, but for less than $500 you can't go wrong really, especially if its in decent condition!!

I'd say hop on it quick! $500 you could make your money back easily. Or invest $2-300 in rebuilding the topend and double your money.

Besides rings and gaskets, what is "normally" involved in the $200 for doing the top end? If the piston and cyliner are shot, that'll be more money for a bore job and new piston?

New piston, and if needed a bore job.

Grab it. If it doesnt work out you can at least double your money parting it out.

While you do a topend rebuild I recommend pulling the clutch cover and checking your counterbalancer bearings. Also when you got the topend off check your rod and crank. Make sure you dont see any copper chips. Sounds like a great deal. I remember when $350 wouldnt even buy a roller. Nice score.

Only reason I was asking is to see how involved a top end rebuild would be...both in work and cost. Being new to 2-strokes that was the reason for asking. Pics are in a new thread.
