Bear with me for a little bit, but I am starting a build on my '85 350X. I bought it from the original owner 3 weeks ago in Muskegon Mi. My original intention was to ride it for a few months and give it a cosmetic refresh. After I got it home I added a UNI filter and rebuilt the stock carb, changed the oil and replaced the plug. That got it running well, and starting on the first or second kick with no noises or excessive smoke, shifted fine through all the gears and pulled pretty well. I dove into the brakes, as the rear caliper, master AND pedal/linkage were ALL bound up tight. I replaced it all and got it to a point where it would stop as well as it ran. At this point I was a happy Camper. (Notice the building momentum of a snowball here?) After scrubbing it down and removing what was left of the original fork boots it didn't look half bad. Like the idiot I am, I failed to take any pictures whatsoever at any of these stages.
Friday night I was out tinkering i the shop and thought I would try swapping on a TRX450r muffler I got from a co worker, along with drilling out the broken bolt on the upper muffler mount as well as the right rear foot peg mount. This is where the snowball REALLY picked up steam. The joint between the muffler and head pipe was on SOLID, PB blaster, Heat, Ice, etc... had no effect. I finally got the muffler off but had to curl up the inlet pretty bad. At this point I thought I would take off the head pipe to clean it up, and trying my damnedest not to ended up breaking off all 4 studs going into the head. At this point I said screw it, I wanted to refresh it anyways, so I blew it all apart down to the bare frame. (The Snowball is ~ 100' in diameter by now) I ordered a set of gussets from TPC, shipped all the aluminum bits and pieces (EVERYTHING but the motor) to GKing polishing this morning, dropped off the swingarm, kick starter, brake linkage, footpegs, shifter, sprocket cover off at the chrome platers. And I dropped off the bare frame at LoKo Coatings to sand blast so it will be nice and clean for welding the gussets on. I also plan on dual Oil coolers and will have to fab up some mounts for that as well. So far this is what is firm on the build:
Stock 85 color scheme on the seat and plastics (Obviously changed to the black plastics and candy red frame)
Progressive springs in the front forks
Goki Starter (I know it is Hideous, but my big plan is a 250r for me to ride and the 350 will be for my Wife)
Simply Suspensions rebuild of the rear shock
10" Front Wheel (From the Group Buy Here)
Wide Foot Pegs from 250r Roostmaster
Candy Red Powder Coating to go with all the bling
Trx 450 Muffler
400EX head pipe
As for the motor I am really thinking I am going to go with a 96MM piston and ported head from Hurricane 635.
I promise to be better at taking pictures from here on out, this is what I have in my shop tonight:
NOS 350x forks (Not sure If I will use them on this build or wait for another project
The 250sx will be the followup project, my plans for it are simple a cosmetic refresh with a white tank red fenders/headlight and blue seat with a candy blue frame, 350x forks, 10" Front Wheel, Exhaust, the 350x Carb and rear suspension upgrade
I am open to any suggestions or ideas concerning either build Thanks for looking Murf
