Permatex Thread Locker (red) vs Loctitie (Red)

Long story short - I tore down the tilt steering column of my 85 CJ7 to tighten up the bolts that stabilze it (steering wheel would literally wobble in every direction). I dont ever want to tear this blankety blank blanker down again. I went to the local auto parts store for Loctite (red) but all they had was Permatex Thread Locker (red). I picked up the Permatex and am now wondering if its as good as Loctite.

I know Loctite is good stuff but have no idea about the permatex - was hoping someone on here had used both and could give some real world advice on which is the best.

The Permatex will be fine. The red 271 / 277 is their high strength which will need heat to dismantle.

....and a different kind of Z

This is 20 year old info but red locktite is considered permanent.
MAYbe used for like ringgears and heavy suspension stuff but nothing into aluminum.
It will take out the threads.

Blue was more for stuff you may want to take apart someday and then
there was 'wick and lock' green and watery.
A drop on the threads AFTER I tightened stuff and forgot the locktite.

Now I use nailpolish because nail polish remover melts it, if I don't have the correct locktite.

Red Loctite will still soften with heat and at a lower temperature than aluminium anneals. The Loctite range is so big it's hard to i.d. stuff by colour any more but I recall red being a lot less permanent than the evil green I used for making sloppy bearing housings good. (It was labelled 'bearing retainer') Even that would break down with heat but it took a lot more heat.

I use a quick-setting white Loctite for all regularly removed engine parts on my race car - unfortunately the number has worn off the label - it was intended as a fluid sealant but also stopped things working loose from vibration and it was weaker than most of the the others. Great for ally.

Both the blues are about the same.... no major issue with either. clear nail polish on my piks on sled worked better than the blue locker. once the polish dries its water tight.
