I've heard of people using thin grease or even Vaseline when mating rims and o-rings together so they don't slip around.
I've also heard that it will help prolong the life of the o-ring.
Anybody heard of this or is it just gibberish? I hear they can be a PIA to get to stay put sometimes when you are putting rims back together.

With my luck, whatever I use would be the wrong stuff and eats rubber.

and bless you for dealing with split rims at all.
I need to do a couple but can't bring myself to even look at them
for more than 1/2 a minute.
They're surrounded by rim halves with the tires cut halfway off them.
Not a good sign for me.
Looking forward to some suggestions too.

Ditch the O-rings alltogether, and clean your rims up real good, then run a continous bead of RTV silicone about the same size as the o-ring all the way around the o-ring groove. You can use red or black RTV, it doesn't really matter for rims. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before you bolt the halves together.Originally Posted by drjoe171

I have a pile of rims halves Joe. Most are waiting for media blasting. But I wanted to put a pair together because my machine is just sitting on jackstands looking all sad. I would also like to be able to move it around the garage and make room so it's not just sitting in the middle.
Stonewall... I may just try that.

a bead where the o-ring went, and skim coat the rest, keeps the water out. I wipe it with acetone first, helps the silicone stick better

x2 my buddy and i have done it this way a few times and it works. every once in a while you might get a leak when doing this, but just pull the silicone off and try again.

I am in the aviation field, and have access to aviation sealants. I have done these with CS3204-B1/2 with great results. Thick bead on each half until it starts to kick off, then assemble loosely and let sit overnight. Tighten the next day fully, and guaranteed not to leak. You can buy this stuff online, but not cheap...........
